Thanked: 884Frederick Reynolds
Got this off the bay this week. Was a bit scruffy, but cleaned up without a lot of effort.
Tortoise scales are in pretty good shape with one small bug bite.
1" wide up front tapering back to 6/8 at he heel
Pretty wedgy I'd say.

SNAP!! I've got one just like it on the bench ATM.
I've polished the blade and am going to replace the lead wedge with aluminium.
I soaked the scales in neetsfoot oil and they have come up lovely.
Can't wait to hone it and shave.
Any idea of the year of manufacture?Hang on and enjoy the ride...

They can be nice shavers, and are a relatively common razor. All the ones I have seen have been blonde horn dyed to look like tortoise, not actual tortoise. And if she's 8/8, you got yourself a big one, too; I've never seen one that big.

Thanked: 884Only thing that makes me think these are true tortoise is the way they have delaminated in a few spots. Doesn't look any of the horn that I've had in the past that was "coming from together" as a buddy of mine used to say.
I could very well be wrong, and when I look at the close up pic of the tang stamp, it does look like horn. Won't be the first time. As I have no tortoise to compare it with, I'll just have to wonder now.
Here's a full resolution pic of the other end.
As for date of manufacture? I really don't have a clue. As close as I'll guess is latter half of 19th century.

Thanked: 884If you had the $49 bid. I apologize for blowing it out in the last 4 seconds, I really did want it though.
I don't have a bid sniping program either. I only bid once and just waited until I figured nobody else could get a bid in and went for it.
We were both pretty much of a like mind on the money though. LOL

I paid $29 for mine so it wasn't me....lol
The scales on mine have delaminated as well at the pivot end but look OK after a bit of careful sanding.
It's just over 7/8 at the widest pointHang on and enjoy the ride...
