My New Toys
Hi Y'all. It's been a while since I've been on...with winter so cold out here it's been problematic shaving while shivering so I fugured I'd give the str8's a break. Now that it has started to warm up, I've treated myself to a "Welcome Back" of sorts. I bought myself a Boker King Cutter from SRD (honed up real nice by Lynn I presume) and a strop from Heirloom Strops - an Old No.2 that's 3" wide with linen on the back. Smooth piece of work. Lynn did his usual outstanding job of honing out the razor reall well and the strop is outstanding. Tony somehow managed to get it out here in 4 days...unreal. Kudos to both men for their outstanding work. Have agreat day...Rich.

Good looking strop, I didn't think they were that wide.

thanks for the compliment...and yeah...sometimes you just GOTTA treat yourself to something real nice huh...I'm really pleased with it...I have one from SRD and it's a nice one as well but I just cut it one time too many when I was beginning to learn how to properly strop...so...between putting away the str8's (and related supplies) for the cold winter and then when I just decided that it was time to get a new one, I had read so many people writing so many good things about Tony's strops I figured I may as well give it a go...glad I did...mine has a light draw compared to the SRD strop...I have to remember to keep the pressure light instead of putting more to it to replicate the feel of my SRD strop...I like them both really but I think that for my full hollow grinds the Old No.2 is the "go to" strop while with the wedges the SRD may be the one to use... I think that between my Old No. 2, King Cutter and my Dovo I might "just" be cured of my RAD...maybe, maybe not...lol...I might just sell a few anyway...I have some that are really good shavers and some that just don't fit me well...plus a seven day set I've never used...I probably have close to 50 in all but...only two strops...so far...lol...

I actually paid a bit extra to custom ordered the 3 inch width. I'm "just" uncoordinated enough to not want to risk cutting the strop (or myself) by worrying about the X pattern of stropping. Ironic too...I am back in the states in between job assignments and I packed up my things as would be the normal case. Well, my strops and razor gear made it back and wouldn't ya know it, my Old No 2 developed a small "crack" where one of the folds was on the strop when I packed them. I didn't "fold" them per se but had them placed in a box around the perimeter surrounding my other gear. So...despite my not wanting to bother learning the X pattern I'm learning it by default to miss that small crack in the leather...so...there ya go huh....irony at its best. Anyhoo...the Old #2 still works great and has a real light draw while my SRD strop has a heavier draw. I would attribute the heavier draw primarily to the attention I paid "palming" it to get it oiled up...I think I need to do that more with the Old #2 as well. I would also say that I added to the "oiliness" by rubbing the strop lengthwise on my scalp in between washing so it could pick up some of the light oil from my scalp...then I'd palm it further. Don't know if it's an "approved" idea but it seems to work.
