Thread: Baxter Blue Steel "Not a Replica" Hart Steel

Hello everyone,
I received today the "Not a Replica" designed by Baxter of California made by Hart Steel straight razor.
At first glance: Wow what a razor, now this is a modern razor! Its not for everyone I get it but if you truly appreciate straight razors, I know you will do a double take. This razor has a black finish not a black paint coat. I apologize in advance because I dont know how this "process" happens (no info on Hart Steel website or Baxter of California). When I called Hart Steel the main person was tied up and all I could get was the blade is same as others but has a different finishing to create the black. This is a 6/8- Quarter ground. The weight of the blade is nice. The scales however I am not fond of, trully disappointed. They seem to be of a different material than that of the white scales. I purchased bocote scales for it today. The leather sleeve is made by MAKR Carry Goods, hand crafted in the USA- Genuine Shell Cordovan Leather hand stitched. Color is a very dark navy blue. Overall very satisfied. This is not a review but a mere first glance.
I will update you guys on how the shave is, unfortunately I shaved last night so the waiting begins..

I love the look! My first "new" razor is going to be a Hart. I just wish they had that finish in a 7/8".

Yes the stock scales for the Hart's are not all that attractive but they are very functional and may outlast the blade. : )
I seem to remember Baxter ordered this same razor a couple of years back as an Baxter anniversary model. Enjoy!

I've looked at this razor for a while now, but when the sales rep called me to sell product to my shop he didn't recommend their own razor for some reason. I think it's probablly the coolest look for a razor as it matches a few pair of shears.

Looks to me like it was "hot blued" like a gun.

I remember when I was working in a gun shop and we did hot bluing, that you could get a nearly black finish if you left it in the tank long enough.

This IS a blued blade, Wullie, but not hot-blued, as the temperature would compromise the blade integrity.

Also, I've been wanting to get this blade since I've first found it! I have to say, i'm glad you got it before me, as i'm dying to hear a review on it. I've read some other reviews on Hart Steel, and they seem to know pretty damn well what they're doing, so I just might get one for myself. Good purchase, Rivera!

I have gone to Straight Razor Heaven and came back to tell you that this blade is awesome! Shaved last night and WOW! I know you all know that sensation when you first put that blade on your cheek and think "Ok this is the moment of truth". This blade reminds me why I switched over to straight razor shaving. My eyes were wide open in amazement of the smooth glide. I loved the feeling of the quarter ground weight. The guys at Hart Steel did a wonderful job! The out of box sharpness is excellent. I cannot express the feeling of urgency that I felt while shaving of letting you guys know that you need to try these Hart Steel razors. If any of you are looking in the market of buying a new razor, I strongly recommend trying Hart Steel out! I know ill be getting another, maybe a satin finish square point. Anyways I hope you are able to check out Hart sometime these guys are awesome! Have a good one guys.

Hot bluing is hot, but rarely over 310°F which shouldn't be hot enough to affect the temper of any modern steel.

It is hot enough to melt some solders that hold less expensive double barrels together.

Whatever means they used ended up looking very nice.
