Thanked: 884Couldn't find a stump to saw off?
Your idea is good. I like it.
If you're going to leave it outside, I'd think about protecting the end grain of the top side with something.

Thanked: 522Dump a bunch of Wesson Oil on the top grain once a year. That should protect it sufficiently. I do that on my cutting boards and have no trouble..... JERRY

Thanked: 114I can't take credit for the idea. There are many sites with various blacksmithing tips and tricks that I borrowed from. As for location, I only had it outside for the photo; it plans to live in my garage. If it was outside permanently, I'd worry about rusting the anvil (or someone stealing it!). Here's an indoor photo that shows the other side (four slots vs. three on the back).

Thanked: 884Excellent, if not your idea, then your execution is admirable.
You do know NOT to hit the anvil face with the hammer, right?
I got my butt whipped by my grandfather for beating on his anvil one afternoon when I was about 7. Ain't made that mistake since.
