Info On A Shumate Hone?
I was wondering if these Barber's hones are any good and if someone could please give me a little info on this one (possible grit)? Sorry for the picture. I have used it only once to try it out on my practice straight razor, it seems to sharpen pretty good. I used the lather method, I don't believe it's an oil hone, since it's not marked "oil". Thank you

All hones are good, Mike,,just some are better than others.
I have only used two barber hones, one for refreshing a razor or two in the past. The other is a a beat up Swaty that finishes the edges on my large knives & axes. I do collect barber hones though & I'm luck enough to have several, most seem to fall between 6000 to 8000 range. Since I have only used two of my barber hones, Swaty & NeverDull, I really cannot attest to their grit performance.

I have a Shumate hone. I would label it a middle to lower end hone.. It works fine, but it isn't as fine as my Enders or Keen. It works best with lather on it. One thing to note in my case is that my Shumate seems to have taken a beating in it's lifetime.... It is more pitted than my other hones. This could be effecting the ability to hone as good as the others..

I just relized I should've put this thread in the Hone section, SORRY!! Thanks guys for your help. I only used the hone once. To me, it seems close to 4000 grit. I just thought maybe someone knew for sure.

I have a Shumate hone I bought from gssixgun and it's very very smooth. It's a different color from the you have pictured though.
