Thanked: 16Hello guys,
Sorry to resurrect an almost 2 years old thread but I'd like to have you opinion about this Rodgers: tappered or not tappered ?
That was before I cleaned it, now it looks like this (but the tappering is less visible):
So, was it factory tappered or is it just used and was supposed to look like this when new:

Well, neither. The first one you show is not tapered originally. This is evidenced immediately by the massive hone wear at the toe which is why the taper has formed, but also on weaker evidence that this style and time period doesn't turn up tapered examples really. They were mainly a fad in the 1830s-40s (Lummus points this out too).
It would have been a fairly even design like the second razor, but not directly comparable since those are a few decades apart (the first being 1820s and the second not having a clear date identifier but I would guess 1860s-90s).

Thanked: 16Thank you ScienceGuy, that was my feeling too but that topic made me doubt... By the way, than you again for all the usefull informations.
For the second, I wouldn't have tell 1890s... They both share the same IMPROVED SILVER STEEL mention, so naively thought it may have been from the 1840s or 1850s... Like an hommage to the GR crowned first.

Nice pair of Joseph Rogers whatever the date ........ love those Sheffield wedges with genuine ivory scales ..........
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
