New purchase... Chopper
Evening gentleman,
I hope you are all well. I thought i would share a recent purchase with you and ask for your opinions.
I purchased this razor from the bay from a chap in Germany for £32.00. It was advertised as a meat chopper made in 1850. When i received it and checked it over the makers marks seem to have been etched out and im sure they are not the original scales (look far to new for 1850!!!).
Im no expert either but the blade itself measures 6.5cm long... Is this a common size for this type of SR.
Im also looking to get it restored from Jamie (Celticcrusaider) when i have some spare cash.
Here are the pics. Let me onow what you think.

Looks to have been shortened to me. Also the tail seems to have been bent up as never seen one like that before and it don't ring true.
However these should not effect its shaving ability and will make a nice razor when cleaned up.

I was thinking about it being cut short but the way it fits the scales are perfect. Ive tried to take a picture to show you.

You even said yourself you don't think the scales are original.
What size is the blade ? looks to be around the 8/8 mark.

I really like "happy" posts, I get nervous when I think something's wrong, but I just can't get this razor to add up.
I've seen plenty of shortened razors --- but none with a barbers' notch.
The scales just don't seem correct. Most old choppers are in horn of some kind, some translucent, some dyed black, some dyed like tortoise. I can't tell from the pictures what those are made of. But -- it should have a lead or pewter spacer -- that looks like some sort of plastic.
Nobody I know grinds off a maker's mark.
Answers? I've got none. just concerns that add up funny. I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks Stimpy52 i appreciate your views.
Im stumped too. I would like to think that the blade hasnt been shortened. It would have been a long blade if it has been though. It doesnt look to have been shortened.
Still unsure about the scales. Id love to know more about it. Surely someone can recognise something about this SR.
I am looking forward to having it restored and having a shave with it.
Ive taken some more pictures in the hope someone can give further info. Everyone ive spoken to is unsure just like us.
The mystery continues...

Thanked: 1936I have seen the tails like that, but I do feel like it has been shortened & the scales replaced... who cares. It's a nice looking razor. If I were as old as some of these razors I would have parts replaced too! Have her cleaned up, put some period correct scales on it (probably horn), and dance with her.
You mentioned the makers mark, who made it?Southeastern Oklahoma/Northeastern Texas helper. Please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you and God Bless, Scott
