ebay surprise !!
well listing had only 1 pic , that was of the name on the tang and a piece of the scale ... i decided at the low cost id gamble and hopefully score some scales out of it and if not i was only out a cheap price ...
well razor showed up today , i open it up and it isnt as bad as i expected .. scales in pretty good shape , edge a little chewed up ( a good and first challenge for me as far as more than 1 chip to take out ) and some surface rust ..(before) R.SUTCLIFFE .. SHEFFIELD ...RAZOR
MORE IN NEXT POST !!

so i went with 1000 grit to take off the rust with very light pressure as to keep the original look as i got it as much as possible and started noticing an etched blade , so i went lighter and lighter until i was sure it was etched .... well what isnt worn off from being honed is all Masonic etching so that was my big surprise of the day , my first Masonic blade and it was an accident ...lol .. so needless to say the sanding stopped and ive been on the 325 lightly , and 1k for the last hour , and almost got all the chips out ... more work for tonight as im taking a break ...lol

Looks like Mother's is ready to do some work. That's a nice score, it's going to look great when you're done, and no doubt will make an excellent shaver. Congrats!

and the scales are kinda strange also .. usually when i lightly bump horn with a wire wheel to hit the tang between the scales , the horn has the same distinct smell ... these scales smell almost like raw hide and nothing like horn at all ..

Just saw the second set of pics. That bevel looks wicked; it will take some work to correct, and I hope you are able to corrrect it, because that is one cool razor. Good luck.
As for the scales, it's hard to tell from the pics, but they could be made of leather. Not sure if you've ever seen leather scales, but they are out there. Have fun with that one, it has the potential to look real good and unique when you're finished with it.Last edited by IamSt8ght; 02-08-2013 at 11:18 PM.

The scales are most likely bone. I've got an original Fenney 'Tally Ho' in what looks identical -- and it looks for all the world like translucent horn. Wow does it not smell like that, though!
They are not cuir bouilli -- it's very opaque and you can pretty much tell by handling it that it's hardened leather.-Zak Jarvis. Writer. Artist. Bon vivant.

i figured horn but they were a little ruffer and they are filthy black between them , i thought bone for a sec , but i never had bone before so i had and still have no clue .. ive completely blackened 4 qtips and there still filthy .. i wonder if someone put something on them and it is giving them an odd smell cause they smell just like my dogs bones even if you just smell them with out doing anything to them ..
so far the edge just kept chipping while trying to set the bevel , i ended up bread knifing the edge and starting from scratch .. i might go pick up a 600 or 800 stone tomorrow to help in my rebuilding a bevel process cause i dont wanna go back down to the 325 and my ss 1k .. i think the ss stands for super slow , sometimes i think my norton 4k takes more metal off ...lol.. this is gonna be a bigger project then i thought but im ready to attemp the challenge , at least i think i am ...Last edited by gooser; 02-09-2013 at 07:54 AM.

Welcome to the Masonic Club. I know Wullie started a thread in the Razor section. We would love to have this fine example become a part of razor history.
Thanks
