Thread: Just picked up this Wade and Butcher

Antique Wade Butcher Straight Razor Sheffield England The Celebrated | eBay

Thoughts? I offered the guy $30 and he took it. IMO, it doesn't look like it will need much done to get shave ready, but then again I am a total noob (haven't even gotten my razor in yet from Larry at Whipped Dog to have my first shave yet!). I will most likely be sending this off to somebody to get it professionally honed. But I also got a micro abrasive hone from Larry, so if I get confident with my honing skills on a cheap razor then I may give it a shot. I dunno. I have plenty of time to decide as I know the razor I'm getting from Larry will be shave ready.

Any advice or comments are welcome and appreciated!

EDIT: I will get it around March 4th and will definitely be posting better pics of it using my Canon T2i DSLR.

Nice pick up. I am on my mobile phone now so hard to see the detailed pictures..but looks pretty good from here.

Thanks guys, that's what I was hoping to hear. Being a total noob, I was scared I was getting a bad one, but I've been quickly learning to know what to look for. Hopefully I like it when I see it in person.

You still may have. As with photos of starlets, the real may be different from the photo.

True, good point. You can only tell so much from pictures... Hopefully it's good when I get it. I'll be sure to post pics ASAP.

Got it in! It's in pretty darn shape best I can tell, but I seek the advice from the pros here... (Sorry for the iPhone 5 pics, I was lazy and didn't feel like busting out the Canon)









Already has a pretty sharp edge on it, but I assume it will need a proper honing, which I cannot do with a simple 12K barbers hone?

Congrats, nice looking razor! My first thoughts was it looks more like a W&B Bow than a celebrated but i guess the truth is in the etching on the blade. Looks to be in good cosmetic shape and dosnt have any visible defects that are beyond repair. One thing i noticed is the edge by the toe looks a little sloppy... Its got a little bulge that can be easily honed out. I think once the bulge is gone it should have a nice even spike point (which i like). While your learning you may want to consider having the point muted so you dont go freddy kruger on yourself. With a little TLC you should have a great shaver! Take some mothers polish to the blade and the handles.... in less than an hour you will be impressed how good the should clean up.

Thanks for the advice! I'll pick up some Mothers soon then and get to work.

Do you have any idea if the 12000 barbers hone I purchased from Whipped Dog will be sufficient for honing this blade? I would like to work on it myself if possible, but if I have to send it off then it's not the end of the world. Again, thanks for your advice thus far!

Its hard to tell with out blade in hand or close ups of the edge, my guess it going to be no. I would recommend doing any clean up or restoration work that need to be done first and the depending on the condition of the bevel it will likely need to be started on a 1000 or a 4000.... im going to say at least a 1000 in this case because it appears the toe needs some work. IMO send this one out after you clean it up open the box, shave and enjoy... once you get to enjoy it with a good bevel and edge you can take it to your 12k and try your hands at touching it up.... Just my 2 cents.
