Default Lignum Vitae?? I think so!!!

Today I dropped into one of the local antique markets that I frequent quite often. After doing some research about Lignum vitae wood, I learned that one of the many uses was old lawn bowling bowls. My first thought when I learned this was, I'm sure I've seen some in my travels before. So today I had another item on my list of things to look for and I was successful! I found an old bowl made of wood which is super heavy for $7.00. Lignum Vitae???? I'd be willing to bet it is. The nice thing about it is, it was by itself which means I wont feel bad when I cut it up for material. It also has a nice little 3/4" Ivory button in it which will also come in handy for future projects. I also managed to find a nice little coticule hone 4x2, my first coti that should be real fun to play around with.

Bought them for yrs to make gavels and wood carving mallets.Than they got to spendy
Actually made a few for some prominant Judges in santa clara valley along with granet bases.
Being a true Tonal wood,Real Lignum rings like a bell when struck on a hard base.
Be very carefull if you section it on a bandsaw, you can hurt yourself bigtime.

I'll sand a nice flat spot on the bottom before I run it through the band saw. I'll also buy a new blade so its nice and sharp.

I dropped it on my garage floor, concrete, and it makes a loud crack noise. Thoughts??

Most were true lignum, for 7 bux you got a hell of a deal. The safest way to section them is create a flat spot with a disc sander,Than epoxy them to a 2x4.Cutting any round object on a bandsaw is fraught with danger,be carefull

Yer Amazing! That's exactly what I'll do. Can't wait to get it sectioned and see what she looks like on the inside. Thanks Pixel!

Wellcome, If true lignum will be yellow in color, will turn dark in the sun as the oils oxidize, clean the ground off area with lacquer thinner or acetone before gluing.

Got the coticule lapped and it has some crazy grain patterns to it. I have lots of reading ahead on how to use it properly, I'm excited to try it out.

Not a whole lot of good material left but should serve well for a while.
