    That one's called a Gillette NEW and it's got the ball-end handle. Yours even has some of the gold finish left. Nice one.

    I believe all the open combs above are called news,than you have the Canadian Gillettes and the british models.
    My Fave is the Open comb New deluxe.All great razors.

    There's also the Old type and the New Improved - both older than the NEW.

    I'm rather uneducated, so would someone mind telling me what the point of an open comb razor is? I figured it was for thinning a beard out

    I think it was more for shaving off a beard. I guess the theory is that longer whiskers could remain standing and be guided into the blade rather than being pushed down like they would with a safety bar. Maybe in those days lots of men didn't shave that often?
