You can turn off display of these inline pictures in your User CP settings. I've got them turned off and these inline photos show up a links instead.

Edit: User CP/Options/Thread Display Options/Show Inline Images - it's a checkbox. You can also turn off signatures (also highly recommended), and avatars (also highly recommended depending on Joe C's current avatar)
