I was willing to chock it up to operator malfunction, at the same time I have lost unread messages and was wanting to let people know I'm not ignoring them.

Corruption in one of the database tables that is responsible for the organization of the private messages, but not the messages themselves. I've recreated the junked data from the rest so you should be good - you have a PM from me as well.
