I think some SOTD pics are too large and in contrast the default size uploaded by my computer looks smallish. I went to a photo hosting site to get a leetle bigger. I'm trying to fix things so I can upload a 1 MB intact which someone has suggested is the proper size. I can export close to a 1 MB pic but it shows up when I upload to the site as larger....frustrating but not entirely. I kind of welcome the challenge. I see several sizes on the SOTD. I'm looking for the mid-range uploaded from my Mac. Ain't there yet.

The size of the file depends on how complex the image is. The images hosted on SRP are resized to when first uploaded 700px x 700px (or if not square the largest dimension is 700px). A single color 700x700 image is much smaller file size than random noise of colors in the same 700x700 size. But it's still something on the order of a 100kB.

So, even if you upload a 20MB file all but 100kB will be discarded when the image is resized to 700x700.

Hosting a large image somewhere else and inlining it doesn't do much for most browsers as it ends up being rendered at 700px or less. What happens is that people are forced to download all 20MB and then process it on their computers by their browser to be rendered at much lower resolution. Essentially the same resizing job that could be done once on SRP on upload is now being done hundred and thousands of times when the page is loaded on each person's computer, plus they have to wait longer to download the file.

I'll try this one more time. I see a multitude of sizes of uploaded photos some the 'regular' size (700x700 I guess) and some ginormous. The ginormous ones and some of the larger ones are inlined (you hover a cursor and can click out to the hosting site). But there are sizes that are larger than the standard upload but are not inlined. Is that wholly dependent on the 'random noise of colors' in the pic?

I think there may be some confusion between the size of the file and the dimensions of the image.
Any image that is uploaded to SRP will end up with its largest dimension 700px or less which corresponds to file size to less than a 100kB or so.

It may be easier if you can point to some examples.

Within SOTD there are multiples sizes of pics. Some are inlined and this is confirmed by holding the cursor over the pic and clicking. You will be taken to the hosting site. Others in various sizes appear as well, some are in the 'standard' size and some are larger. Throw out the standard size and the ginormous pics or even large pics that have been inlined. How did they get the remaining pics to post?
Sorry my tech language is not very precise.

Right, point me to some that are 'larger than the standard'. If you click on the post number at the top right corner that is the link to that specific post - copy and paste it here and I'll tell you what is going on with it.
Most likely it is still hosted to a third party site, but it's just the image without a link to that site. But have to see the specific case to confirm.

Default Google Drive to the rescue...

RTFM to the rescue: Permalinks for Google Drive images.

    What I did:
    1. Created a new folder "SRP" in a Google Drive
    2. Set the folder's permissions to "anyone with the link can view"
    3. Uploaded an image
    4. Got its shareable link
    5. Replaced everything but its actual ID with http://drive.google.com/uc?export=download&id=
    6. Et voilą...
