I too don't consider myself a "Senior Member" and certainly don't have the knowledge or experience to guide new members in pursuing this wonderful hobby of ours.
I'm definitely still wet behind the ears!Tony

Thanked: 1081I see it as senior "active" member of SRP. Someone who has 1000 + posts doesn't necessarily mean they are knowledgeable and someone might have just joined the forum but have been straight razor shaving and honing for years.
I only joined SRP after about 2 years because I wanted to learn more about honing. Im no novice but I learn something everytime I hone so in my eyes im definitely not a senior honer.

I don't know when, or why, they picked that specific number. Off the top of my head I'd say a person with 150 posts has demonstrated that they are interested enough to stick around and be a contributing part of the community.
A lot of guys come and go and never get 150 posts but they are soon forgotten. Just IMHO.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I think this is so important to remember. Just because someone is brand new to this forum doesn't mean they haven't been straight shaving, honing, collecting, and restoring for years. I've seen this happen many times. There are many people "out there" that have a ton of experience and knowledge that aren't even aware of this forum. I've ran into a few over the past couple/few years.
The opposite is true too. Some people join the forum and are on here all day every day and have thousands of posts in less than a year and are still learning. Then you have some that are on here for years with just a few posts and have become respected vendors. Others may have been here for years and have thousands of posts but have never honed a razor or use mainly a DE day to day and are not proficient with a straight. The combinations are many.
I look at the Senior status to be meaningful when it comes to activity on a forum. Nothing more. Getting to know people you will find out what you need to know and maybe more.Last edited by Steel; 01-04-2016 at 04:17 PM. Reason: Pour speling-hehe
What a curse be a dull razor; what a prideful comfort a sharp one

Thanked: 4826Today I was scrolling through the member list just to get a grasp of how many people had larger numbers for post and are still active. Compared to the number of people that are members to the site the number of active members with large post counts is fairly low. I did not count or do any statistical analysis just a scroll buy. It surprised me.
It's not what you know, it's who you take fishing!

When I began lurking in '06, and then joined in '07, there was a cadre of guys who were the 'regulars', the experts on SRP. There are very few of them still participating. I guess they either frequent other shaving forums, or they have gotten into other pursuits.
I am a member of gun related forums such as Cast Boolits, Kahr Talk, The Firing Line, a few Glock forums, and I haven't been back to any of them in a dog's age. It is just a matter of what holds the interest. When guys lose interest they move on, no matter what the former participation.Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 1587As far as I'm aware it is a forum software setting that kicks in, or used to, at 100 posts. I think of it as an encouragement to participate.
We are a community-based forum. Certainly there are knowledgeable people here, but these user titles have absolutely no relationship to knowledge or experience. The user titles are about participation in our community.
So think of it as a pat on the bum for hanging around for 100 posts, and a hope that you'll stay and contribute for many many years to come, during which time you will not only learn but also pass on that knowledge to new people and in the process become an "expert".

It is 100 post and it's 100 because that is the default setting that comes with the software.
One can have many different levels, and I think the two, Junior Member & Senior Member, are preset just as an illustration of the functionality and don't have any meaning beyond that.
There is one customization that somebody put around 10 years ago - at 2000 posts and it comes with a little animation . Except that a moderator status or custom title overrides it so I never got it myself.

I guess I'm a comer-and-goer. Just found the forum about 2 yrs ago. Long-time (39 yrs) straight shaver, but not much of a contributor. I enjoy the conversations and information but I can't devote the amount of time it usually takes to post something as meaningful to other members. Thanks to the rest of you who make this an enjoyable place to 'socialize'.
