Well the latest update on running chat on our site is that the hosting company won’t allow any chat or chat-like software on their servers now! And to enforce that, they’ve disabled both our chat and shout-it features.
While we’re looking at other alternatives, I thought maybe we could try a PRIVATE chat-room on a free chat site for this Sunday’s chat. It’s called “Gabbly”. I don’t know much about it’s performance, so we’ll just have to try it out and see. I’ve already created the room… to join the chat, click the link below.
http://gabbly.com/private/SRP%20Barbershop/puma
It will load a floating chat window over the Gabbly page.
- Resize the chat window by grabbing one of the bottom corners with your mouse and expand as desired.
- Type your SRP user name in the Name field and click the icon immediately to the right of that field to make that your name for the chat session.
Most everything else is pretty intuitive. AFAIK registering with Gabbly is optional and I don’t see any advantage to registering at this time… so it’s your choice.

Joe, just to try it out I tried to sign in to Gabby just like you said to and it won't let me. I wonder if I need to register? Do you have any ideas?
if anything has been abnormal for a long enough period it then becomes normal.

I don't know. I registered when I was investigating the site a few days ago, but it didn't appear as though that would be necessary. Also, I don't think I need to have the room open for others to enter, but one never knows. I've opened it on my machine and will leave it open for a while so you can see if that helps.
edit: BTW, their site has a fairly restrictive list of browsers they claim to support. I can attest to IE and Firefox working on windows at revisions higher than they list. I don't know about Opera, and browsers running under Linux or Mac.Last edited by azjoe; 06-10-2007 at 07:30 PM.

Steve... there was a "Steve" in the chat room earlier in the day -- wasn't that you?
In any case, I have no explanations for why you failed to get in. On my system during the chat last night it appeared as though there was a dialog between my PC and Gabbly at least once a second, maybe shorter... that's a lot of bandwidth and it requires a fair amount of processing power to keep up. There are so many variables... connection type/speed (eg, dsl, cable, dial-up, etc.), OS (eg, WinXP, Linux, Mac, etc.), Browser (eg, Firefox, IE, Opera, etc.)... and then there are the revisions levels of each, your security settings, cpu speed, etc., etc., etc.! Steve, if you and DwarvenChef can provide some of the details of your configurations, we might be able to sort out some of the gotchas.
Nonetheless, we did hold a chat last night and at one point there was 7-8 people concurrently active. (On a normal chat night the numbers range between 5-15.) Several of last night's participants were on dial-up connections and at least one (uclicker) had significant difficulty keeping connected to the chat. I also noticed several posts in the chat did not make sense... I assume that's because an occasional message was getting lost, but there's no way of proving that.
Gabbly is a bare-bones chat... no frills and few amenities. And at the moment, it's the only game in town.

Yes that was me earlier in the day but when I came back for the chat at the regular time, I failed to get on. I didn't do anything different so I'm not sure what happened. Thanks for the offer to help sort out the gotchas but it's not worth trying to solve all the variables for a temporary situation.
I'll wait a time with patience until the chat situation is resolved. In the meantime, if I get a chance, I'll try Gabbly again.Last edited by steve; 06-11-2007 at 03:53 PM.
