Who?...............What?
Yes, salt is an interesting topic.
At one time it was used as currency and highly prized. Much salt is mined by flooding and pumping up the brine and letting the water evaporate. In San Diego at the end of the bay they flood fields with seawater and let it evaporate then package it to use with water softeners. In some places it's mined as "rock salt". In Southern New Mexico a salt mine is used to store nuclear waste. In some places trace minerals can make salt just about every color of the rainbow. The photo below is a specimen from Germany with trace Aluminum.

I have noticed shartonn and I like it a lot!
And for the record since we are talking salt I love Himalayan pink and fleur de sel. Lol!
I smoked some salt before. Need to do that again!
On the smoker. With some mesquite!! :rofl2:
Yes, Roy! I felt the need to clarify after I typed that..
and then, the end came.....

We do have a off topic thread somewhere.
You mean Ed's??

A good friend of mine just recommended the same thing a couple of days ago! Lol, I was going to smoke some of the Himalaya pink on plum wood I have next time I BBQ. Did not think too many people smoked their own salts, besides some young college student on the news! Lol!
A friend dropped off some apple wood behind my garage last week for smoking.
When I went out to bring it into the yard a day and a half later I discovered someone thought they needed it more than I did.
To keep this on topic I wonder what apple smoked salt would taste like............:hmmm:
Well salt has a melting point of around 1400 F so smoking it may be difficult.
Infusing it with smoke?
Yes! Yes, Infuse is the right word. I was going to try it as he is a very good chef I know but I will admit it sounds a little gimmicky. He works in a high end restaurant so it's a 50/50 chance. Lol!
Sorry that is enough of my derailment.
Derailment, bit more, re Smokey salt.
Don’t forget the water as that’s the binder, and key.

I’ll put in a larger shallow pan of drinking water and smoke that as well.
Make ice cubes for whiskey that are also infused with the smoke essence.
Makes a 3 year old taste much older, har.

Back to the original topic, Tom raised:
I was on a firearms forum (to be unnamed), when some member listed a very ordinary, near new pistol for sale with a very skimpy description and no pictures for $1750 (sells retail for $525). Being the helpful person I am, I posted, "pictures would be helpful"--nothing else -- and got an 180 day "infraction" for crosstalk, with the admonition to "read the rules".
I messaged the a-shat moderator apologizing, and saying I was just trying to help with the sale, and he replied asking "if I could read"? I no longer frequent said forum, and departed leaving behind some less pleasant crosstalk.
Now I think that I have heard it all.
Smoking water!
I wonder if you took an aquarium pump and circulated it over a baffle while smoking if it would gather the smoke quicker. :hmmm::rofl2:
Hey! Bong-Water ice cubes!
Huh. This was a mostly military gun forum as-well. Most of the guys have 15 or 20 of everything. Picky and kinda rude.
I just have fun with them with my 'incorrect' stuff. They don't know what to say when I tell them I don't care if something has been replaced or numbers don't match. I get the feeling they are trying to run me off.
Sharp dudes, though. They know EVERYTHING! Argue amongst themselves for 3 pages on traces of paint on a butt-plate!
I am about to sort all of my rifles by picking their brains and pissing them off, however.
A few more fixes and I will disappear until something malfunctions again! :D
Here is the chit-chat rule! Seems apparent I cannot help myself?, Violation 'E'.
If they had a like button I would have just hit that!
Boy. We would all be banned! :D

5. COMMENTS AND CHIT CHAT WILL NOT BE TOLERATED
This is not a discussion board and is not to be used as one. Possible reasons for unwanted chit chat:
A. Asking price - If you do not like an individual’s asking price, it is not your place to post that the price is too high. Use the Report the post “triangular shaped icon in the lower left corner of the posting” to send the posting to the Trader Moderators. The problem will be fixed. This is one of the many reasons for the post-reporting feature. Do not comment.
B. Seller does not know the items value - there are forums to help them out. Use the Report the post “triangular shaped icon in the lower left corner of the posting” to send the posting to the Trader Moderators. The problem will be fixed. This is one of the many reasons for the post-reporting feature. Do not comment.
C. Seller does not have a price listed – Use the Report the post “triangular shaped icon in the lower left corner of the posting” to send the posting to the Trader Moderators. The problem will be fixed. This is one of the many reasons for the post-reporting feature. Do not comment.
D. Seller does not know the item is a fake, “humped” rebuilt/reconditioned non original or condition different than posted. Use the Report the post “triangular shaped icon in the lower left corner of the posting” to send the posting to the Trader Moderators. The problem will be fixed. This is one of the many reasons for the post-reporting feature. Do not comment.
E. Commenting because you cannot help yourself or cannot resist the urge - Send them a PM or e-mail.
UNLESS THE COMMENTS ARE DIRECTLY RELATED TO THE PURCHASE OR TRADE OF A LISTING ITEM, THEY WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. NONE. ZERO. NADA – Clear enough? If after all this clarifying and you must make a comment, you will receive an infraction. THERE WILL BE NO WARNINGS!" :dropjaw:

I hear ya, Tom-Nothing worse than a pedantic internet know-it-all who uses every conversation to show their esoteric knowledge of some topic that few people care about (like straight shaving lol!). Thankfully, most experienced guys here just genuinely enjoy sharing knowledge and advancing our hobby without being annoying boors about it.
Years ago, I got myself banned from another popular shaving forum by a butt-hole mod over some minor infraction (or to be more accurate, all my posts were deleted as though I had never existed at all cuz that's how they roll lol). Y'all know which one without me even saying. I just got tired of being smacked on the wrist over "ungentlemanly behavior"-please. I actually told him to ban me, and he did.
The weird thing is, I still lurk-read that forum quite often with no lingering hard feelings, as there's a lot of great information about experimental or unorthodox honing topics especially that get short shrift here (convex hones anyone?). But it appears that SRP is my "home" forum for this hobby (whatever that acronym stands for these days haha!).
I guess if I ever get a gang-tat it will have the SRP logo on it, is what I'm sayin.'
edit: Oh, and in catching up on this thread, I have a question: can you hone on a block of salt? :rofl2:
Hard to believe you could be banned anywhere, Aaron!
On this forum I am referring to there are no introductions, welcomes, likes, thanks.
They don't respond to friend requests. I do have one though.....Pops!
Like a private club of old farts. I should think new blood should be brought forth.
Who are they going to sell all their jillions of firearms to? Certainly not each other.
They already have everything! :rofl2:
Guess they will take it with them!
Oh! YES! You CAN hone on a block of salt! Let me know how that goes? ;)
I've never experienced the overboard heavy handed mods on forums but there are locksmith forums that I have belonged to which I quit frequenting because it was full of arrogant p®|¢£s that are so busy trying to be the expert that they will talk about stuff as if they were the world's foremost authority while giving incorrect information. Dude, if you don't know it for sure then shut the HELL UP. That internet know it all bit just bugs the crap out of me.
Now, I should add that it's one thing to say "well, I think maybe...blah, blah, blah" but people come to these trade oriented forums because they ran into a problem and are trying to find the CORRECT answer so they can finish a job. That's not the place for you to play Cliff Clavin and make it up as you go. On a forum like this you have people who are in it professionally but mostly it's a hobbyist audience. In the ones I'm talking about it's all professional locksmiths who are out trying to run a business. Those jack-wagon "sport picker" joker's can't get onto or even access the site.
Firearms, guns, gun control, NRA, 2nd amendment , very difficult to have a "Gentlemen" conversation about any of these topics. Started a thread on here few years ago after a school shooting, hinted about gun control, got over 1000 responses in like 2 days and an overwhelming personal message inbox. Many many conversation were totally inappropriate. That said i am not surprised about this whatsoever.
If you touch the 3d rail, expect to get shocked.
Not sure what the perspective of your post was Martin, but if you ventured into gun control at all, that's "politics" and you can expect to get reactions of all types.
On a firearms forum, the discussion is about the use, maintenance and merits of different types and configurations of firearms, much like SRP is about shaving. So discussions are usually factual (colored some by opinion/experience) and controversy is rare. Few people go on firearms forums and say, "Why do you need these things?" just like few come on SRP and say, "Why do you need a SR or DE when my Trac II gives a better shave than either?"
Woooo BOY! IfYou want to open up Pandora's box on a forum start talking about gun control. I of course have my own opinions about it but each person is so convinced in the validity of their own argument that I don't think anyone will ever be convinced by facts, reason or statistics. I'm not even going to say what side I'm on but it shouldn't be hard to guess...I live in Florida for God's sake.
There's only one thing I can say about gun control.
It takes a steady hand, to be able to hit your target, so make sure to use both hands. That's proper gun control.!
OH! That is verboten here. For good reason. You DID bring it up, Martin! :deal:
On the aforementioned forum, they have a few closed subforums on that sort of subject. It sez you must obtain a password from the moderator to go there.
If you share the password.....You know. :mace:
Not going there. Not I! Plenty of places to go for that if you want to.
All about the shave here!
That is a deep subject, the gun control one. It is nearly impossible to have a rational discussion with anyone on either side of that topic. I have had people literally turn their back to me for trying to discuss the topic after they started, because I did not agree with their side. In general I don’t try to discuss it with anyone that does not bring the subject up. It is a hot topic in Canada as well. Not quite as heated as it is in the US. It may be worse than trying to discuss religion.
Oh well.....Everyone go post a Shave of the Day! That's the ticket! :D
No regrets starting this thread. I think it has run it's course....And then some.
Spendur. Do that voodoo that you do.
Bury that bad boy before it turns ugly and starts to smell!
The biggest problem, around the world it seems, is people place a ton of personal pride into a shared opinion to the point it becomes their identity. When this happens, any disagreement becomes an attack on their identity. This usually results in people using unrelated topics to verbally attack someone that they disagree with. This is really disappointing because when I have the opportunity to have a calm, thoughtful discussion with someone with an opposing viewpoint, we usually come to a middle ground or just have a better understanding of why their background resulted in their beliefs. One's identity shouldn't be defined by a group, but the other way around.
Hiwever, the majority of "conversations I have nowadays are just someone interrupting me to the point that it is like talking to a youtube video.
Gold Dollar... anyone? :roflmao
“(convex hones anyone?)”
Are you talking about Convex Honing knives or straight razors?
I have been purchasing components for making a set of convex hones for knives. I will post the method and results if there is interest. It is rather simple and inexpensive.
I have read and seen the video of the guy who makes the “Humped” hone that he claims Dovo uses. I fail to see where intentionally convexing a straight razor edge is necessary or beneficial. Except for honing a warped razor, which I suspect is what Dovo uses it for.
As we all know Dovo factory edges are not stellar or in some cases “shave ready”.
