Are you talking about Convex Honing knives or straight razors?

I have been purchasing components for making a set of convex hones for knives. I will post the method and results if there is interest. It is rather simple and inexpensive.

I have read and seen the video of the guy who makes the “Humped” hone that he claims Dovo uses. I fail to see where intentionally convexing a straight razor edge is necessary or beneficial. Except for honing a warped razor, which I suspect is what Dovo uses it for.

As we all know Dovo factory edges are not stellar or in some cases “shave ready”.

Though it took a great deal of burnishing and breaking in, I have used it for both razors and knives with stellar (and very quick) results, especially on warped or seriously smiling razors. I just had to find out for myself, and it's now another rock in my arsenal.

I haven't posted about it on here because I don't give a flip who thinks they work or don't work unless they actually have one they have tried (though I have traded pm's with a couple of other users-we have a secret club).

That is one thing I think we could very much learn from the other forum: i.e., being less dogmatic and more open to experimentation with different honing techniques.

I'm going to go hone my Gold Dollar with tape on my convex hone now-y'all have fun honing whichever way works best for you.

edit: I hope that you don't think that was aimed at you, Marty. We all know that you are constantly testing and experimenting and sharing your detailed, quantified results with all of us, and I appreciate it. It's just a larger observation about the forum culture here sometimes. (Now back to Kum-ba-ya around the campfire).

Between the desk job and the farming, this summer has been a gong show and I've not been able to participate much. It's good know that this is always one of the soft places to land. So yeah, thumbs up to this community!

I am making a set of paddle strops for convex honing knives. Glass tiles, Yoga matt rubber feet, hard stamp pad rubber backer with wet and dry abrasives, glued on with spray adhesive and easily replaceable.

The hard rubber will flex and should convex nicely. I also have some large gaming mouse pads, a bit thinner and harder than most, but softer than the stamp pad rubber.

I am basing my design on paddle strops made and posted by The Apostle P on his site and by JD Larrabee, (Edgewright), (MohaveMann) also posted on Apostle P’s site and MohaveMann’s Facebook site. C links below.

Rather that make the grits interchangeable, I will just make glass paddles in each grit, (220,400,600,1k & 2k), varying the backer for different grinds. I also plan to fit some as strops of different medium, with and without backers, different leathers, canvas and linen, to use with a variety of paste, CBN, Diamond, metal polish and Chrome Ox, Fe Oxide, and Cerium.

I also picked up a couple new Black Ark stones and plan to dome one and give it a try Convex honing razors. I plan to lap with loose Diamonds, I pick up a number of low, loose grits and have been reading machinist’s sites on lapping granite surface plates, where they use dry loose diamonds with quick, great results.

As far as Dovo’s use of convex stones, I hone a lot of new Dovo’s and none of their edges are really shave ready. Their “problem” razors have problem edges. I can see why they need a humped convex stone to hone some of their razors, it may be quicker in a production environment to get them out the door.

I also want to try some of the “Newer”, inexpensive Arks to see what kind of an edge they will produce. I plan on eventually making these stones, knife only anyway, so worst case is, it gets lapped flat in the end.

Very interesting, Marty-That's what I'm talking about. You're always experimenting and seeing what works or doesn't work, and sharing your results. As you say, you can always go back and flatten a convexed hone with your dry loose diamonds if you don't like it.

As for what Dovo does, I don't have much interest either way. Like many who started around 10 years ago, I got the standard Dovo Best 5/8" from SRD with free honing, and that has been my only real experience with them. I suppose a Dovo dealer like Jarrod at TSS, or others who hone lots of new "shave-ready" Dovos have to care.

Anyway, if you're like me (easily bored with zero attention span), I just like to experiment, even after I feel I have dialed in a natural hone. "I wonder what would happen if....," I often wonder as I play with razors and hones. I find that the longer I do this and the more experience I get, the more often my intuition is right, or at least close enough to tweak thing a bit further to a smokin' smooth edge.

Not sure I completely follow the convex thing. I'm on mobile data so I haven't watched the video yet but I assume that there is a hump longwise down the stone or strop. Someone mentioned using it for warped razors. I have thought about standing the stone on it's edge and honing on the narrow edge.
