I prefer samurai Rabbit!:D Usagi Yojimbo is a Japanese cartoon character from the 60s or 70s! My Father used to call me crusader rabbit and my mother, being Japanese, raised me on samurai ideals intermingled with Christian principals! So the name fit what my father called me and how my mother raised me!
Thanks guys! Not a moment too soon -- I've been talking up SRP over at the Motley Fool forums... :nj

Well I am back and again a Junior Member.
Good to see the site back up.
I've lost a little over 100 posts. I would like a full refund. Thanks much.
Bah ... servers and forums (all their myriad elements) can go through hell sometimes.
FYI -- We received an apology from Site5 (our hosting company) today... following is an excerpt:
Everyone at Site5 apologizes profusely for this situation; you can rest assured knowing that we are doing everything we can to prevent this from happening again in the future. As this email is being drawn up, Site5's Director of Technical Operations, [name deleted], is working closely with our technical managers and dedicated teams from our new datacenter, ThePlanet, preparing to launch an all new backup system for our servers by the end of the month. This new system will help to ensure the integrity of our fleet-wide backups, as well as maintain up to date backups of all your account's files and databases. And, they issued us a generous credit. It's refreshing to see a company actually take responsibility for their actions when they screw up.
On the contrary.
In this case, SRP is a non-profit site, so apart from the annoyance, no money was lost.
But for any operation who depends on the uptime of the host to make money, there will now be a game of 'pin the blame on the donkey' to see who exactly is responsible.
Well I finaly made it back...luckly I didn't loose much!
Just making sure I understand correctly... All of my previous posts and PMs are forever gone now? There will be no restore of all the stuff lost? Right?
:cen
WooHoo we're back .. Sunday was a nightmare no reading and yesterday in work .well ooooft I had to actually do work ...
Good to see things back to day well done ..
Garry
...I see I also lost about half my posts , ah well c'est la vi :)
lost 200 posts myself. oh well
Haven't counted how many I lost. I am glad to see the site back up though. I would have had to keep all this stuff I have for the give away.:hmmm: OK I'm Just Kidding. I knew Joe and David could do it. these two guys are the greatest.:bow :bow :bow :tu

I lost close to 225 posts as well...no biggy though, I figure that it's just a small thing. What I'm really sad about is loosing some of the great threads, like the Newbie Honing Experiment, Stropping Speed experiment, and the recent threads on razor restoration and pin selection.
Boo-Urns!
Mark
Yeah we need the adjustable pin threads redone. I was just about to start playing with those.
Big +1 on the adjustable thread post .. I forgot to bookmark and take note of the nut's and screw sizes  Didn't think I'd need to .. just use SRP for my reference .
To answer your questions...
- AFAIK, the problem was not due to any outside influences (ie, a hacker or a virus). The server was supposedly a brand new machine brought on-line back in Oct. when our Host moved our account to ThePlanet's data center (which, btw, claims to be the largest privately held dedicated server host in the world... they maintain in excess of 26,000 servers.) The attachment below is just a portion of one of the many isles in their facility.
- Our server is Unix based.
- As I understand it, there were more recent backups, but they were corrupt.
Thanks for the update. It's always interesting to know what happens behind the scenes at SRP.
Nice to know we weren't hacked or infected too.
First, let me say I’m no supporter of Microsoft… I think they use planned obsolescence tactics to force people to upgrade to newer versions of software that the user doesn’t need. IBM championed this approach in the early days of computers and Microsoft has capitalized on it quite nicely. Nonetheless, you can’t deny their success. They enjoy having 94% market share of the desktop and a 55% share of the Server market. (For those interested, in the desktop arena Mac and Linux both have approx 2% each and in the server arena Linux has about 25%). I don't know if that makes them evil or just smart.;)
Hail to IBM's OS/2 :) still used by a lot of banks to this day - oh and I still have an OS/2 machine and a few Linux machines and AiX ..
Sad to say we don't use OS/2 internally* any more although I dare say theres some servers lurking about ..
Sadly on my everyday workhorse machine I still reluctantly have to use XP :(
*Internally - as in inside the bigblue company that designed and launched OS/2 :w
How on earth ...
Good job getting it back up. Luckily it was a quick turn. I found myself cruising ebay for stuff I didn't need. Luckily this place is back.
I'm not sure why this thread is active again? There was (to my knowledge) no database failure or losses in yesterday's (02Mar) outage. Have I missed something?
