To answer your questions...
- AFAIK, the problem was not due to any outside influences (ie, a hacker or a virus). The server was supposedly a brand new machine brought on-line back in Oct. when our Host moved our account to ThePlanet's data center (which, btw, claims to be the largest privately held dedicated server host in the world... they maintain in excess of 26,000 servers.

- Our server is Unix based.
- As I understand it, there were more recent backups, but they were corrupt.
