First, let me say I’m no supporter of Microsoft… I think they use planned obsolescence tactics to force people to upgrade to newer versions of software that the user doesn’t need. IBM championed this approach in the early days of computers and Microsoft has capitalized on it quite nicely. Nonetheless, you can’t deny their success. They enjoy having 94% market share of the desktop and a 55% share of the Server market. (For those interested, in the desktop arena Mac and Linux both have approx 2% each and in the server arena Linux has about 25%). I don't know if that makes them evil or just smart.

Hail to IBM's OS/2 still used by a lot of banks to this day - oh and I still have an OS/2 machine and a few Linux machines and AiX ..
Sad to say we don't use OS/2 internally* any more although I dare say theres some servers lurking about ..
Sadly on my everyday workhorse machine I still reluctantly have to use XP

*Internally - as in inside the bigblue company that designed and launched OS/2
