I believe the delete function is based on a timer. It is only available for a certain amount of time.
I like CactusBob's approach, but as you can see we have many members who have different opinions on this point.
I'm a member of the Fountain Pen Network forum and in their B/S/T type section they have an archives area as a sub-forum. Anything over something like 3 weeks old gets sent there for a record of what has sold and at what prices. Unsold items go as well and it's up to the owner to simply relist again in the current section.
It saves browsing though as many sold and unsold items when looking for something, yet all the post remain if needed, just in a separate area. Each day there are 20 to 60 posts of new things so it is escpecially important there as things quickly get pushed several pages back.

Thanks tony for the info, that kinda summarises what I'd been getting at, but i still like deleting however getting an archive together is a good idea and would probably be a better alternative, with the way the guys were talking.
