    Default Chat problem

This is what I get when I try to log on to the chat.
    _______

    [23:38] Connecting...
    [23:38] Logging in...
    [23:38] -- *** Looking up your hostname...
[23:38] -- *** Found your hostname, welcome back
    [23:38] -- *** Checking ident
    [23:39] -- *** No identd (auth) response
[23:39] Error : Closing Link: 127.0.0.1 (Connection Timed Out)
    [23:39] Disconnected from chat.freenode.net

    _______

    And . . . yes I know why!
It is because I have a nickname that is already in use by somebody else on freenode. This means that everybody with a 'normal' nickname, instead of something like 'Thi67DFr6%' will find it impossible to log on.
To bad. I like to chat and would even change my nick for that but, to bad . . . you can only log on with your SRP nick can't you?!
If the chat set-up stays like this then I find it is better to just keep the chat box on the front page and get rid of the tab indicated 'chat'.
    Just my opinion.
Is somebody still looking for a better solution for the chat??

Yes, I think Don has that problem too. But he started using xchat and the nickname DonA and he gets in fine via xchat.

If you would like to use something other than the Chat link above (at least until something else can be worked out) and another nickname (Nicolas-SRP?), check out this link - http://straightrazorpalace.com/gener...-srp-chat.html

PM or email me and I will be happy to help. Thanks.

The chat is still in it infancy in this form but while its not perfect I am sure David will get the bugs worked out.

As far as I can tell, you can log in with any name that isn't being used. It would be nice though if the error message clearly stated what the specific problem was
Find me on SRP's official chat in ##srp on Freenode. Link is at top of SRP's homepage

Not quite. This message is because the machine trying to connect to the freenode IRC server either has port 113 blocked on its network, or because it has no identd running. Cf. ident.

Not necessarily, as the IRC server being used is a public one, and does not belong to SRP, so to speak.

I hope not. Apart from the nickname issue, which, admittedly, is somewhat cumbersome if your SRP nick is already taken, IRC is the best solution to "chat" there is.

Have you tried using an IRC client (cf. links on freenode.net) instead of the Java chat on SRP for testing purposes?
