You've got more rep then you think with or without the green things. :tu

Oh Bravo Jimmy!! That was very well said indeed :bow
If I had not already given you rep for something else earlier, I'd rep the hell out of you for that post my man!
On that topic, why can't I re-rep someone who does or says more than one excellent thing in a row? That is perhaps, if we keep this inane system, the most infuriatingly stupid aspect of the whole debarkle.
James.
The other day I did a Google search on "Straight Razor Forums" and got this:

I was like . . . Daaaaaaaang!
To be honest, the things I said until now are just what I figured out myself.
So I have no clue why someone can't be re-repped multiple times in succession, or things like that.
If I didn't post anything about the details before, it's simply because I didn't know much more than 'the rep system is now online'
Moderators, super and normal both,
How many atta boys do I have to award some deserving chap for him to get another greenie? Do I need to intersperse this with thanks as well? How many thanks does it take to equal an atta boy repper upper? How many up-reps does it take to get an additional greenie? These things are covered where on the how-to-and-why page? And we find the how-to-and-why page where?
I like the rep system, what could be finer than a stratified caste system. Oh well I will just go hone my razor with milk and a brick the way a one green chiclet untouchable should.
I really enjoy and appreciate the work that goes into this forum but I have nothing but sarcasm for this silly popularity metering system.

No one asked, (SydneyKidney asked for a +1 button, which is an entirely different thing), and I wonder if there's anyone truly happy with the current situation, that seems to reflect... well, what does it reflects, actually? I don't know.
The dialog box that comes up simply asks if you agree or disagree with a post. Seems to be a reflection of the thanks button with an un-thank option? But I don't understand how this equals 'reputation'.
The way I see it so far guys with respectable reputations have only one green chiclet eg 'Traveller' & Mike Blue to name a couple. Maybe in time the 'Scales' will balance
OK guys,
lots of us have expressed our dislike for the current reps system but let's all remember that the reason we come here is to learn more about our hobbies and addictions and to help others down those same paths to financial ruin ;)
it seems that every year right before the holiday season we really get passionate about some silly idea that has nothing to do with shaving... I'll admit i participate willingly but can we stop this all before the sarcasm and light comedy turns again to bitter infighting?
oh yeah and feel free to give me some negative rep whenever you want... I'm not here to be the prom queen :mace:
Found it! vBulletin® - Instant Community -->documentation --> view online manual --> reputation system
I agree with this. I started the wet shaving kick about two years ago, and straights at the beginning of this year, and I can't say it took long to figure out on each forum who really gave good advice and who just ranted, and who was good at what, and who had tastes like mine. And people are pretty good about zooming in and correcting "bad" advice, and people are pretty sporting about acknowledging it when there is a grey area with different philosophies.
I always love the just "thanks" system because the guys that get thanked alot tend to be the guys that really help with specific questions, and if someone has a lot of thankses that means something. whereas I'm not sure what to make of a lot of green thingies. I don't think most of us really are going to give negative reputation - that personality type tends to gravitate to another forum.
So between people on this forum being generally pretty savvy and knowing good adivce when they see it, and people being good about making sure questions end up getting the best answers, don't think we need the reputation. Having said that it doesn't bug me. I didn't get very many thankses anyway. I guess I'm more of a shaveforum taker than giver. I'm going to need therapy now. I'm so selfish.
Oh cool that little crying dude is green! :D
Does the rep system here only allow you to add to someone's rep one time? If you are only allowed to increment a member's rep one time then it has more value once you get to large numbers. I would assume "rep" to mean that a lot of different people have bumped your rep as opposed to a few people bumping your rep a lot of times.
I don’t post a lot might lurk around a lot of the time:w, but in my lurking I have spotted a few spammers:mace: and reported them the last one just a few days ago while they were actively replying to a thread my question is does this earn you more reputation because it’s behind the scenes same as the mod’s which in turn will add more credence to my posts when I do post even if I am totally off the ball in that answer a bit like this one really:D, there was nothing wrong with the old system you could still see how many times a person had been thanked under their name when they posted

Thanks: 9Thanked 10 Times in 10 Posts
The ++^^program just informed me I have given out too much reputation in the last 24 hours and must try later if I want to enhance anyone's standing in the community.:ziplip: This is terrible as there are so many deserving of positive recognition and, of course, there are a few of us who must be busted down a notch or two. Oh, oh, I get it: I've just been busted down that notch or two, but that was by a darned machine.:nono:
Is there no justice??
:td
The next time I have a good idea i'm keeping it to myself and figuring out a way to make money from it. You will then all be free to misinterpret it as much as you like for a small fee.
Now if you'll excuse me, me and my lonely green dit are off to compose another Christmas ditty. ;)
He was indeed; Past tense being the key to that phrase.

Thank you, glorious one! Mad rep for that one I say!

You know, I don't really care one way or the other about the reputation system. I am amazed at the concern expressed however. My main concern remains at providing our members with the best straight razor information and assistance available. It has been that from the start and it will always be that for me. The true value of what you say and do on this forum can be seen and appreciated by all members all the time. That value is in how you help new people, the level or your craftsmanship and the willingness to share your knowledge with others.
Thanks folks,
Lynn
As always, Lynn, the true voice of reason.
Thanks for helping bring the forum's purpose back-to-basics, so to speak. We get so caught up in the forum world, that we forget the intent sometimes...
That's the problem with the Kool-Aid - it just tastes so good! :rofl2:
Mark
that it does. i will admit that i have been involved in some not so meaningful conversations on here and other forums. guilty as charged. hopefully any post i have made in the meaningful threads helped. my problem is that the MotoGP and WSBK and AMA seasons are over so i have nothing to watch or talk about.
i am at the point in my straight shaving journey where i can hone my blades to a pretty sharp and confortable edge, and my skills are not to bad. the only thing left is practice which takes time. it is going very well though with no frustration for wuite some time.
so for now i will indulge in the not so important threads a little. cuz really it makes no difference how many green things i have.
Can anyone in the know go over the requisites for acquiring green squares? Is it a simple arithmetic formula where so many tnxs = a greenie or are the tnxes increased in value by some constant or variable based on the number of greenies the tnxer has? Or are there other variables at work here as well?
I am at a loss to explain this, but every time this greenie thing come to mind I hear Tevye singing, "If I were a rich man.":w
...and may your rewards be great,
:D
I dont hyave a clue about how these points or green thingies work, All I know is that Im not sharing any of mine....so you can go away now!
nun2,
You are right to be concerned as you have 200% more greenies than I. :p Fortunately, I am not a thief (didn't someone else say that?) and neither know how to nor am I interested in stealing your greenies. Nor would I comment negatively in an attempt to dilute your positives and soften that vibrant kelly green to some palid pastel. Nope, what you have is safe and well earned, I'm sure. :gl: in gathering more of these hard sought rewards.:tu
and Merry Christmas,
Chi,
I knew it was something like that. Thanks for the clarification. I'd say that deserves a hearty round of reputation. Mount your keyboards, boys, and herd them there mouses.
Hmmm, couldn't remember the Nixon quote and it's obvious I'm no Rowdy Yates: it's no wonder I can count my greenies on one finger.
