Thanked: 1212Reputation frustration
Can someone with the proper powers transfer half my reputation to Heavydutysg135, Randydance062449, AfDavis11, or any one of the other seasoned hone-, strop- and shave-masters, who earned their stripes long before the installment of the green dots.
Or, even better, jettison the whole charade and be done with it once and for all.
No one asked, (SydneyKidney asked for a +1 button, which is an entirely different thing), and I wonder if there's anyone truly happy with the current situation, that seems to reflect... well, what does it reflects, actually? I don't know.
I understand that someone (probably David Wessel) has gone through the effort of installing the expansion. I think StraightRazorPlace rocks, with or without the reputation ratings. I salute those that put their energy in making this place my favorite website. My cyberhome! Now, where did I leave my slippers?
Thanks,
Bart.

I thought the green dots just meant someone has posted a certain amount which in my case means nothing other than spending too much time on SRP rather than providing me with any sort of credibility.

It is more than just post count (I don't know if that factors in at all, actually). Would someone be so kind as to explain what it IS?

Thanked: 335Hmmm... green spots: I see them but don't have the faintest idea what they mean. Could we maybe get some red ones too for nice Christmas colors? And maybe a coupla dreidls for Hanukkah.
Oh, and a secret room for the guys...
Now, if I whine too much do I get the figurative lumps of coal black spots? Lemme work on this a bit and get those BTUs ready.

Thanked: 1587I agree Bruce. In fact, I agree so much that I gave you some rep for the post, in the hope that the fame you crave will develop into a spectacular aura about, and perhaps (in the fullness of time) turn you into a diamond in the rough before flowering into a glorious beacon of light in the near future.

Hmmm, I didn't like the reputation thing either until I got a second green thingie Then I felt like it was kind of cool. Kidding aside, I don't feel one way or the other about it but I certainly agree with Bart that Heavydutysg135, Randydance062449, and AfDavis11should have a whole heap of green dots. I'll throw The Topher and mparker762 in there for good measure.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Afaik, post count does not factor in at all. And I should know, being one of the most active posters atm
The only things I have found to influence rep is the thank you button and the 'add / remove rep' button.
The reason e.g. Randy does not have a maxed out rep is that it only starts counting from the moment it was enabled. With time, he and the others will still come out ahead. It'll just not be instantaneous.
I can understand your idea, Bart, but there are so many factors that it is just not a good idea. Because who decides whom to give mass rep to? I can agree with Randy for example.
But what about Vlad? The most gifted restorer ever to come here imo, so he should deserve a tremendous rep. Except he is not around anymore, sadly.
Or take Bill Ellis. Some will want to give him a max rep, yet he has left SRP on purpose. And not everyone would think he is worthy of rep, for whatever reason, fair or not.
If we now have to retroactively add rep, the majority of high rep members will not even be active members. Several of the people mentioned already have not been active for many months.
And by doing it, we'd effectively be turning it into a popularity contest, granting chunks of rep by popular vote.
Yes, if the rep system had been enabled from the start, it would have looked different. But it has been enabled fairly late in the game. Give it a couple of months and it'll stabilize into proportions that match the reputation of the active population. It needs time to reflect actual reputation.
Trying to retroactively fit it to what the majority thinks it should be is not practical.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.

Additionally, for everyone who think someone deserves a chunk of positive rep, there is at least someone who think that same person deserves negative rep.
That is another reason why doing this via popular vote is not a good idea.
Let rep build itself out over time. In a couple of months time it will have sorted itself out.Til shade is gone, til water is gone, Into the shadow with teeth bared, screaming defiance with the last breath.
