I do not fully understand the reputation issue. I asked but nobody answered. After reading this post, it seems like you get a green square with every 50 thanks.

iirc to really bump up your rep... you need people with high rep scores to give you rep.. their faith in your knowledge and skills means more than say mine with only a "rep power" of 3
thus you get more green thingies. Alas, i have to agree with Bruno, (oh the shame and agony ), and say that it will really suck if it devolves into a popularity contest... nothing will be gained from that.
see i'm just not generally helpful!Be just and fear not.

Thanked: 31OK... I've a handle on the rep squares and how they increase as people give you "rep"... my question has now become what happens to those with low rep? Bannings? Floggings? MOCKERY??!!! I realize the inherent prejudice in the rep system (that's the dictionary definition of prejudice, nothing to do with race) will lead people to regard advice from those with few squares as less valuable than advice from those with a lot of squares, but other than that, any negatives associated with low square count?

you have heard the phrase "pay for play" if your rep does not improve a couple mods drop by your place, kneecap you, take a razor of three but that is the worst i have heard so far...
however, they did approve this:Be just and fear not.

Thanked: 13246FWIW the reputation system has always been on the forum all David did was turn it on so that all could see it...
Thanked posts have always added to ones reputation, the only real difference is that now you can directly add to another's rep or you can thank them for an informative post....
Some of the gun Chat forums that I used to visit frequently had the same systems and in general they work rather well... I am not sure if ours also looks at the threads themselves, but some of the systems would look at a thread that has huge amounts of hits and responses and would add rep to the OP's overall reputation....

Many of the more senior members of the forum posted all or the bulk of their work before "thank" became a public option for the forum. This means regardless of when reputation was being calculated, everyone's reputation was zero anyway until the thanks started flowing several months ago

Here's one thing that I am sure has occurred to others besides myself- the system is already slanted by way of moderators (as I believe Jimbo mentioned briefly). Why on earth do mods and "super"mods have 5 and even 6 stars AUTOMATICALLY? To me that takes absolutely all weight out of the system. Just because one is a mod does not mean their reputation as far as being knowledgeable about all things razors is greater than some of the afore mentioned people. A mod is chosen based on factors way outside of straight razors. I thought the original reputation/+1 discussion was asking to put a system into place where members who gave consistently accurate and valuable information would be "pointed out", not one that turns into a popularity contest (as some recent threads have done) or an "I'm privileged" showcase. I'm sorry- I know how much Wessel and others put into this site, but I think that this has started off on a bad foot.
