It's funny; if I thank first, then unthank a post, I am then able to add reputation

Actually what is easier and better is to right click the reputation button and open link in new window or new tab. That works every time for me.

The problem with the thank unthank method is that the rep system then thinks you have given out more reputation than you actually have so you get the "you have given out too much reputation in the last 24 hours" message
