I would leave mine blank then as I don't consider myself expert in any of those fields, just experienced.
The term "mentor" implies someone willing to help and teach, not expert. Anyone who would follow, without question, what a teacher or mentor says will not do well in any field of endeavor.
I am honored that somebody saw fit to think that any help I might offer has merit.Last edited by JMS; 07-06-2009 at 04:24 PM.

I don't see any difference between these badges and the titles used by corporate America... managers, supervisors, directors, vp's, etc. They are used to separate people into groups according to their jobs and responsibilities.
Works for corporate america, seems like a good idea here, too.

I was an apprentice ironworker and I became a journeyman when I graduated apprentice school. When I began installing carpet I was a "helper." When I reached a certain level of expertise I was a "mechanic" in the parlance of the trade. Personally I don't care for the term helper. Journeyman or something like that would be preferable to me but mentor is alright. As Hamlet told Polonius when he was asked what he was reading ...."words".
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 335Mentor expertise
I endorse RayG's idea of having the various mentors state somewhere obvious what their areas of strength are. After all they were chosen by management for those strengths and their willingness to share their opinion/comment with those seeking advice. The idea behind this badge of mentorship is to give those with questions an idea of where to look or of whom one may ask for help.
I'm hoping the mentors are not assumed to be polymaths simply because they have the badge. I also hope that the conversation between management and the mentors included the reasons for which they were asked to assume the mantle: "I think you know a bunch about this, are you willing to have the inexperienced PM you with questions which are likely to become endlessly repetitive?" The "THIS" ought to be identified for the sake of our new mentors' sanity.
Good luck mentor mantle wearers

That is an interesting idea, and I'm for it. But someone's going to have to tell me what my area of strength is. Friendliness? Ability to use the search function and google? I'm kind of joking, but kind of serious too. If I was told what to put there, I honestly wouldn't know what to put.
