Point of order .... I'm not trying to put words in Bruce's mouth and then quote him but, many times Bruce has been known to say something like the example GWT gives with tongue in cheek. IOW, I think he was kidding around. Bruce has a well developed sense of humor and of irony. BTW, badge or no badge when Utopian talks about honing I listen.

Back on the topic, I only have one razor with a double bevel. a Zowada that came that way. Shaves good. I haven't had to touch it up yet but when I do I will keep it as is because if I ever wanted to sell it I expect the buyer would prefer it be the way it came.

Being somewhat of a traditionalist I prefer to hone my razors with a single bevel and using the one layer of tape I make it a single bevel before I'm through. More work but that is the way I prefer it. I don't need the shortcut.

Like myself on occasion, I think Bruce was just being flip when he wrote that I was right and that was why I was a mentor. I suppose he was also complementing me. While I share the concern of others, banned and not, that labels can stratify the weight given to members' posts, I don't think Bruce's comment proves the point.

I didn't like the green dots. I declared my opinion early on and then I let it go. Some took longer to let go than others. Guess what? The dots are gone! Some of us who didn't like them probably now regret they are gone. I'm still glad to see they are gone.

I am grateful that SRP is here. I'm also grateful for those who work behind the scenes to keep it functional as it continues to grow. Not every decision made by the moderators or by Lynn, who OWNS this forum, is going to be liked by everyone but we all for damn sure should recognize and appreciate the fact that they are trying their best to make it work just as well as they can. We should also recognize that the ultimate decisionfor every aspect of this forum is up to Lynn and the moderators he chose to act on his, and our, behalf.

I'm leery about the mentor badges. I understand the motivation and intent behind it but I share the concern of others that it might make some posts seem more credible. I know that was not the intent but it might be the effect. Lynn and the moderators will continue to run the show and will monitor how this change affects the forum and they will respond accordingly. Remember, the dots are gone. They tried the dots with the best of intentions and then they decided that it wasn't working out the way they intended so they got rid of them.

We've made our concerns about the badges known. Now let's see how it goes. If it's not working out, I trust that changes will be made, as the people that run this place have clearly demonstrated a willingness to keep trying to make this place better.

that may very well be Jimmy, and thank you for pointing this possibility out

I'm not trying to put words in Bruce's mouth either, nor do I think him daft.

but if I can't tell the difference how can others?
even Ron came right back with (even if it was just a disclaimer)

Can we make it straightrazorplace.de then, too? Form follows function, and all that.

Working with adults means aiming at their rationale.
Therefor to aim at your own rationale first.
If the dots were not working out "as expected" I'm wondering what was expected. Something more controllable than a broad range motivation tool? IMO they worked fine as that and cannot easily be taken away without people getting upset about it, cause many of them are quite fond of that form of appreciation, though not many admit.
Now thats one part of the problem.
The second part is badges being handed out in a controlled manner.
Its understandable that you moderators and owners like that better, but it sort of doubles frustration.
Maybe you should have taken things a bit slower and not quite exchange one for the other. Rather wait a little between closing the green dot system and opening the badge system. So reactions would be less rough.

Boards live by their visitors and any such movement will drive some off or make them less ambitioned.

Greatness is to admit an error instead of carrying it forth.

I think they have demonstrated greatness by trying the dots, recognizing and admitting problems, and trying something new.

Maybe we could fix all of this trouble if Bruce were banned. Are the moderators considering this obvious solution?
