I don't care much for the casino but the other two buttons will be missed dearly.
They're still there, but under the quicklinks menu. Granted, it takes an extra second. I can understand new posts, but do you really access your user cp that often?
yes, those were actually the only two buttons that I used all the time.
Out of curiosity: what do you use the user cp for? Reading messages etc can be done via the 'private messages' link. And other than that, the only interesting stuff are settings that hardly ever change. Then again, I don't use all forum possibilities, so I could be missing something.
I use the CP, because it immediately brings me to all my subscribed threads that have new replies and to all new PMs.
It's the first page I visit when I log in.
After checking the new replies out, my second "navigational" mouse click is the New Post button.
You just cleaned out my 2 most used buttons in the top row. :hmmm:
Don't worry about it: I don't mind spending 2 clicks where I could get by with one previously. There's still something called "favorites" in any web browser.
Kind regards,
Bart.
Yes.
In the mornings when I log in, I go to User-CP and read all the new posts in subscribed threads.
When I'm through with them, I spend the rest of the day hammering "New Posts".
I hardly use the index page or anything else.
You've removed the two buttons I use most as well. New Posts is the button I use most. New Posts is where I spend the majority of my time. When I move to the Classifieds or Wiki, I use the New Post button to take me back.
CP I use to discover threads I'm subscribed to, that have new posts added to them, but are off the New Posts page.
I rarely use "Quick Links" because it takes two clicks, which isn't very quick. :)
I'll just add that those were the two buttons that I used the most as well. :o
Not trying to pile on, but we were actually just discussing this in chat.
I really want to thank you guys for your constant efforts to improve things around here, it really is great. But...
Well, New Posts is by far the button I used most...Next is Search and then Classifieds.
I have never, ever used the "Community" or "FAQ" button--isn't the FAQ just a link to the wiki?
I do the same as Bart and Olivia, but I like the rearrangement. It makes more sense as a top level heading menu.
It'll take some getting used to for me, but I think it is a good thing - it's simpler somehow and looks better
:mexwave:
Really will miss the CP button. It was the one I clicked every time immediately I logged in. I spent a good 15 minutes trying to find my subscribed threads earlier. Thanks for the redirect
What you can do to avoid the two clicks, is bookmark "New Posts" and "Subscribed Threads" and placed them on the Bookmark Toolbar in Firefox. I don't use IE but I'm assuming you can do something similar there.
Hey guys. Just cleaning up a a bit where we can.. We more room we have there for top level items, the more new good stuff we can bring you :)
The new post button was the one I used the most too.
How about moving Wiki, Reviews and FAQ, under a new drop-down called "Documentation" and putting back New Posts? Just a thought.
Well that depends :).. It is for you. However, what about a new person that's just showing up? Do you think they need to know where to get the the chat and webcast more than they need to know how to get to User CP or New Posts?
And I'll go a step further, by looking at the statistics for the site. Those two buttons aren't the most used.. Forums and Wiki are the two most used buttons.

Well, pretty well the only button I used was "New Posts." I'd like to kindly request it be brought back.
Mark
If the New Posts button isn't what people use to keep track of posts they haven't previously seen, how do they do it? If there's a better way than New Posts, some education would be nice. Thanks
As with any new changes, there will be those people that like it and those that don't. Just like the changes that came before this one, we will get accustomed to it and go on. Sometimes change seems difficult but in the end it's for the better. Let's give it a chance and see.
I agree with Mike no one likes change and yeah I'll miss the usercp but as soon as the muscle memory kicks in from using the quicklinks over and over you won't hardly even notice the difference and will realize that the drop box is a faster and more accessible option.
I will say that without this announcement I would have continued to think that my browser had hiccuped and that the buttons just didn't load....this will probably take some time for this info to reach everyone and will have to be repeated at naseum till everyone is up to speed.
I thank all the mods who continue to improve and make this place even better than it already is and hope they will understand that they are appreciated and that the members will just need some time to readjust.
any hint as to what new features we can look forward too?:D
I like the new layout a lot better.
Regarding "missing" menu items:
- Click on the Quick Links item.
- Right click on the item you want to bookmark.
- Bookmark the item.
- In your browser, go to "bookmarks -> organise" (wording might be different).
- Put the item into your "Bookmarks Toolbar" folder (if not there already).
- Useful in Firefox: add a keyword, so that you only have to enter the keyword into the URL bar, then hit enter.
This is what it looks like in my browser:

This neat freak B/S is ridiculous and I for one am not going to be polite and pretend that it is not. Requiring two mouse clicks to access "New Posts", the most used button on the tool bar, to make room for what ?
Right now, relative to my screen, my tool bar is a bit over half filled with buttons. How does having empty space where the missing buttons once were "improve" SRP ? Inquiring minds want to know.
Ergonomics and repetitive stress should be taken into consideration too. People get carpal tunnel problems from too many mouse clicks. Not kidding with that. Changing the most used button to require two mouse clicks doesn't make sense.
If the neat freak obsession is overpowering go rearrange the Wiki for the twentieth time .
Set your screen resolution to 1024*768 and you will suddenly see the light.
That is still the 'standard' resolution we design for afaik. And at that resolution, the screen was filled when those buttons were there.
Hey Jimmy.
Your screen may only be half filled. But someone with a smaller screen, say on a laptop like the one I'm on right now, their screen will be almost full. The website has to work best for everyone, and that's a lot of different computer, configurations, screen sizes, etc. If I had added one more button, it would have gone off of their screen.
I promise, I'll try and put something good there to make it worthwhile..
Bruno, I'm not trying to be argumentative. I for one have never accessed 'Webcast'. Rarely accessed 'Reviews' or 'Community'. I must have hit 'New Post' thousands of times. I don't really care about having to do two mouse clicks to access 'User CP' as seldom as I need to get there but 'New Posts' ?
It is probably the most used button on the tool bar by the majority of the members here. IMHO moving it was a mistake. It could be easily corrected and it ought to be. BTW, my previous post where I referred to repetitive stress relative to the added mouse clicks was not a spurious consideration.
fortunately for me, I had one of the old threads open when the changes were made. All I have to do is have 2 tabs open when I close Firefox and I can save them forever (at least as long as I have the same computer).
totally agree with Jimmy!
please move them back on.
I am happy to have a temp solution for firefox now,
by installing the greasemonkey addon
and the script scoof thankfully wrote for it,
http://nerd.dk/srp2.user.js
but since not everybody is using firefox,
it would really be better to bring those buttons back on.
I used to say that while all progress is change, not all change is progress; however, considering that my job is ultimately controlled by politicians, who all know are as fickle as the winds, and those who report to them, I now have learned to say that change is good.
Yup, I gave up: finer minds and all that. Join me, "change is good..." :mexwave:
As an IT professional I have to say that all of the complaints are valid and should be given strong consideration. When I logged into SRP this morning I was lost w/o the new post menu selection and was unaware of the changes.
The best IT professionals I know are the ones that listen to the clients and not the ones that justify their actions over the complaints and are creative enough to accommodate all the needs at the same time.
SRP is a great place because of the users here and their input. A lot of the people complaining here post a lot and are very helpful. Are you sure these are the people you want to alienate?
Well said, Joed.
For what it's worth, the New Posts Bookmark idea, even if it does work (which I don't think it does based on my prior experience with this stuff), is silly to have to do. Why should I have to bookmark a button on one of my favorite sites when it was always available to me while it was becoming one of my favorite sites? You guys know the statistics of which buttons get hit the most, and considering that my question wasn't answered earlier, I'm assuming "new posts" isn't anywhere near the bottom of that list of buttons.
This is the first time that I've ever heard of making frequently used features HARDER to access. Usually it's the exact opposite.
Hey guys, we've been locking at the feedback. We are not going to put the buttons back, but I am going to make the new posts link available under your status box (the one that says 'welcome, xyz')
That is unobstrusive enough not to matter, and out of the way of the button bar.
