What's special about SRP?
There are other shaving forums on the internet.
Even though we are the only English-based forum dedicated to straight razors, surely there is something else about us that separates us from all the others. Is it members' willingness to freely share what they've learned, is it the giveaways, is it the get-togethers that let us share the hobby in a more personal way than just over the internet? Or maybe it's the gameroom
For me it's the united stand we take to help establish "splash" as a noun
For me I think it's the involvement that SRP offers me if I choose to take advantage of it. There are so many different avenues available on SRP for me to share whatever I've learned about straight razors and get the feeling I'm helping make a difference to others wherever they are in the hobby.
So what is it you appreciate most about SRP, what sets it apart from all the others?

I just think the fact that we are all so willing to help each other, that we welcome new folk into the fold so easily and that we are actually a very gentlemanly forum are all things that other sites lack.
I've read so many forums where discussions start out and within a dozen posts have decended into members hurling abuse at each other and slinging threats around, and I've just left right away.
A forum is supposed to be where a group of like minded individuals can meet, share information, stories and shoot the breeze with each other, and this is the only forum where that happens in a way that I want to be a part of it.
Its also the members that make this place. There are so many people from so many walks of life and its a real joy to talk with you all. I've met people I otherwise would not have met because of this place, and thats really unique for a web forum.
We're also a real group of innovators, as Jimmy has mentioned in a thread he wrote recently. We're keeping an old skill alive, and adding in modern technologies and ideas. Water cutters for razor blanks, restoring old razors to their former glory, new scale materials, making our own brushes and even making modern custom razors. There are people out there making soaps and creams, strops and using combinations of hones to get these killer edges. This place is a real mine of information, and whats even more amazing is that we're all prepared to share it with others.
This place really is the best forum on the net, and I really enjoy talking with you all! I could wax lyrical for hours about how great it is to be here, and all the things I enjoy about being a member here. But I'll probably hit some sort of a post limit eventually..!
Anyway, I'll get off my soapbox now!
In a nutshell, this place rocks!
EDIT: Oh, and the fact that we are aiding the recognition of "splash" as a noun..!Last edited by Stubear; 02-12-2010 at 03:12 PM.

For me it's a wide variety of reasons.
SRP is well-designed and well-moderated. I've only been here a year but I've seen some big changes, and with anything significant I've found that the site/wiki development team have said "Hey guys, we're testing this out; give us feedback!" -- and more importantly, they listen to the feedback.
SRP also contains a wealth of information. Questions to the forums are answered promptly, the wiki is extensive, the experts are readily available through several means, and as far as I've seen, the chat room is always populated.
What I enjoy most about SRP is that it is one of the few (if not the only) sites I visit with members of all walks of life. Variance amongst age, gender, professions and political views (ha!), just to name a few.

Thanked: 530Thank you, Lee, I needed a good laugh
What I think separates us from them is that we are generous, kindhearted people. I'm not saying other sites don't have a fair number of do-gooders, but this site is MADE of them. Good deeds are the expected decorum here. So, between the giveaways, the knowledge that flows like cheap beer at a Nascar rally, and the people who just randomly donate to other members -outside of giveaways- everyone is just willing to share what they have, be it in internet teaching, face to face meetings and teachings, Monthly/holiday giveaways, and so many people just mailing out their excess when others are in need.
And the people are funneh!

It's just a great site. Everyone gets along (even when we don't share the same views) for the most part. Even though several members are of different age, social status, job type, regional area, we all share a common interest. The interest is a very specific. Even though we are all different there is a common love for something classic.
That and all the help, even the newest members feel like it's ok to jump in and try to help with what they have learned. Everyone helps everyone else and that is not something that is commonly seen anymore (it's really sad). The moderators of this site are really great about letting everyone help and give there opinion on topics. Some of the other shaving sites do not allow members to speak as freely as is allowed on this site. If you disagree with the moderators of other sites they just kick you off the site. Here if there is a disagreement it is handled properly and worked out. To me it seems like the owner and moderators of this site love straight shaving so much that sometimes they suck up there pride and respect the love everyone else has, even if they don't agree with a specific way something is done, honing, prep, lathering, what ever it may be.
I am proud to be a member and will never hesitate to refer people to this site.
Thanks everyone for all the help in the past and all the help in the future

SRP is the greatest because of it's helpful members who've provided it's great resources. If it wasn't for SRP I couldn't shave with a straight razor or hone one to shave ready. I think that SRP is also a shaving forum with a friendly atmosphere. IME not all of them are.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Everything that's been said so far, and....
1. Fathers used to teach their sons this art. If not for SRP, where are you going to get this kind of information. Yeah you could teach it to yourself by yourself. But that would be a hell of a lot of styptic pencils!
2. It's incredible to me how heated the political conversations get, and then you go to a str8 forum, and people act like it never happened and start helping each other again. Pretty cool!
3. The fact that you have somebody like Lynn to draw infinite support from, and then he goes ahead and keeps us grounded by pointing out "it's only shaving for pete's sake". Nice!
4. A place for never ending experimentation with posted results. The engineer in me likes that.
5. Then Brad posts a great recipe for pasta!
6. Then somebody posts their favorite pipe tobacco.
See the pattern here? A wellspring of knowledge and support.

I haven't joined any other straight forums, but from my experience here, and my time spent on paintball forums I can point out a few things which I think make this site as good as it is.
Firstly, every new comer receives a warm welcome and is brought right into the fold without any of the "hazing" I've encountered on some other sites.
The members of the site are knowledgable, and not only willing to share their thoughts and experiences, but excited to. I've yet to encounter a member with an eliteist attitude.
The founders and the moderators join in the conversations, adding their own suggestions and advice based on their past and current experience. In many other forums I've frequented, these people sat high above on their internet clouds, never joining in the convo.
I'm very glad I found this website. It has made learning to straight shave so fun and pleasurable, as opposed to the nicked up razor burned mess I was before finding this site.
Thanks SRP
