Straight Razor List
Is it my imagination or is it all most impossible to find the list of acceptable and unacceptable brands of razors in the Wiki?
I know a lot of you guys have it bookmarked, but what about a newby who hasn't got a clue. All he's been told is to, "read the Wiki".
How about if it was featured by name somewhere on the main page. I think it may go a long way to helping users avoid making possibly costly mistakes and avoid a lot of beginner frustration.

Its in the FAQ's which are linked from the front page under the Getting Started section.
I suppose its just a trade off between linking the most important things and not having a massive first page of the site with each heading listed out.
Theres so many bits of the Wiki that are useful for a beginner, I guess its hard to know what to put front and centre, but the FAQ's are a must read I think.

To follow the path go to 'Wiki', 'Getting Started', 'FAQ' as Stubear said, then to '5. Razors', '5.1 Buying Razors' -- '5.1.1.1 Which Razors Are Considered Good?' I agree that it would be good to have this as a Sticky for easy access.

Thanked: 1903That depends on your approach.
Well, that should not happen, and hardly ever does when senior members refer beginners to the Wiki. As an aside, if "the Wiki" were called "the SRP Knowledgebase" (which it actually is), a lot of people would probably be more inclined to actually use it.
That said, common courtesy dictates the beginners familiarise themselves with a community first. That includes, but is not necessarily limited to, reading the FAQ, where the relevant entry is easily found. The beginners guide, which also contains both lists, is the most prominent link on the Wiki entry page. Nothing more we can do here, really.
There is more to straight razor shaving than picking a razor. We have compiled the beginners guide in a way that should help a beginner cover most, if not all, aspects of beginning with straight razor shaving. I personally believe that if you do not want to invest one hour into reading this guide (probably even less, as it really is not that big), you do not bring the required level of patience to the table, anyway.
As far as sticky posts are concerned, I feel that we have too many of those already. Needless to say that the shopping list one contains a link to the FAQ and the beginners guide.

Robin

Robin,
I'm really not sure what you are driving at. I HAVE read the FAQ cover to cover so to speak and HAVE followed normal courtesy protocol. I have been at this table since December and have contributed. All I was asking about was the possibliity of making the lists easier to find for new comers. I really wasn't inviting nor looking for a dressing-down.

Two clicks. Click on "Wiki". Click on "Beginner's guide". There it is. There are a ton of useful pages on the Database, and if there were all linked to from the front page it would be better to just make the SRP Database the homepage and the forum down another path. That wasn't really a dressing down, either. I mean, c'mon now. I am on some forums that would have given you hell for asking how to navigate to a wiki entry. More than likely with a large helping of profanity to boot. Any time that I see "Read the Wiki" offered up by a member, it is generally after at least an attempt at an answer to the OP's question, and usually has a section of the database linked. I love being a member of this forum for many reasons, one of which is the amount of help offered by the senior members. But if I can't find info in the beginner's section of the database, I have no business moving a sharp object across my face in the first place.

You're absolutely right! It was a knee jerk response by me and I apologize if I was off base. I do think a lot of this forum and its members, not to mention all the great info and help I've received. I guess I was just expecting a "yes we can do that" or "no it's fine the way it is" answer.
I was a mentor on another forum for many years and I know what you're talking about with people getting very touchy.

It's really just one click: there's an FAQ link along the top navbar right next to the classifieds.

Well I'll say one thing y'all... I'll sure never forget where the lists are located.
That's what's great about these kinds of groups, everyone's generally got their own opinion but it all comes together in the end.
