edit: The Java client seems to be working (which is odd, because usually it doesn't work for me)... The problem seems to be isolated to using Pidgin as a chat client. SASL authentication is supposed to be optional for freenode.
Check off the "Use SSL" box on the authentication settings, see if it helps:
