    Default Where do YOU Live?????

Wouldn’t it be a nice idea to have a world map with SRP members flags on where they live? I know they are mainly in America but there are still a good number else where in the world. I think it would be nice thing to browse around.

It would be a neat thing to have. But I'm afraid it's beyond the scope of the forum. We have no information as to where a member lives unless they volunteer it in their profile.

What about a thread with member introductions, broken down like:
    USA
    |
    |-Oklahoma
    |-Oklahoma City
    |-Tulsa
    |
    |-Texas
    |-DFW
    |-Houston
    |-Austin

    etc.

    Just an idea...

I pitched the idea of doing this months ago to Lynn. Google offers a service for this, we just make it a sticky in of the forums and away we go. I'll have to find the link again tomorrow as I have to get to bed soon.

Actually, there is a vBulletin add-in to do what you're talking about. It would be a nice addition to the site, but (there's always a but ) I just don't have time right now to investigate it thoroughly. (The support thread for it is 98 pages long ... and the half dozen or so pages I read this morning didn't encourage me to jump right in with installing it.) So, it's on the list of things we might do when we get time, okay? (For those more curious, [here's] a site running it... have patience, the screen load time can be significant.)

    Joe,

My idea was to use the Google Map, something like this!

Randy, we're talking about the same thing... B&B uses the same addin ("vbgooglemap me") I was talking about. Google provides the map... the purpose of the addin is to tell Google where to put the pins and what info to display -- that requires some software and database stuff over and above the google feature. The add-in has recently become popular with the vBulletin community... if you do a search you'll find hundreds of sites using it. In the vBulletin world, addins (they call them "hacks") are features developed by users (some free, some for purchase) that compliment or extend the forum software. These hacks are supported by their developers, not Jelsoft (the vBulletin provider).

I'm really not negative on this at all... I just haven't had the time to investigate it thoroughly. Several flags went up in my cursory view yesterday... namely, that the Google portion is currently free but they reserve the right to charge a fee or insert advertising at a future date, that the feature might make the site sluggish under some circumstances, and that if we uninstall it the uninstall doesn't clean up the database. The latter is of concern because the vBulletin people require us to disable and/or remove all such add-ins whenever we ask them for support when something in the forum malfunctions... this can result in significant work and forum disruption. Lastly, are there any security and privacy concerns. I just like to know what the risks are before I jump into the water, if you know what I mean.
