Sorry for the naive question but... what does "NOS" mean? I just can't figure it out!

I have seen different definitions of New Old Stock. Some just say never used, some in the original packaging and/or unopened, some say never sold (so a demo/display piece could be NOS). Personally, I use it to mean a vintage item that has never been used.
