Last thread I saw started by a lady in regards to shaving down under I remember refering her to the ladies only section simply due to this reason. I concur Bruno and wish all would see your warning, but I honestly doubt all will. It shouldn't matter if someone is shaving any part of their body, we all should be courteous to one another.

Yes, there are some language differences between the countries this forum covers, but a Gentleman is a Gentleman, no matter what country or language.

What many of us often forget is that besides speaking different languages, there are also major cultural differences. What may be deemed acceptable behaviour in one part of the world would definitely not be in another. When all is said and done it is the World Wide Web. Even in the English speaking world there are wide variations in attitude to what constitutes good manners. In the UK and I am sure the USA also, age and family background has a marked effect.

So how then do you police that? and whose standards are to be used? Would it not, possibly be, offensive to tell someone that what they say could be deemed by some to be offensive, when in fact, what was said was not meant to be taken that way? And if the standards of the one policing the 'standards' finds something acceptable that others from different cultures do not, what then? I'm not trying to be a bast...a pric...a pain in the ars...a thorn in the side here ;). I'm genuinely curious and concerned that I may have missed something.

I think the way to "police" the cultural differences among us gentlemen is already being done. We have moderators of this forum in all corners of the World. For instance, Bruno is in Belgium, Otto & Birnando are in Norway, Ryan82 from Cananda, and of course all the mods here in the US. I believe there is a general mod consensus before decisions are made on matters concerning the forum. While all may or may not agree, what's usually best for the forum is the direction the moderators take.

Remember awhile back the decision regarding sig lines? If I recall not all the mods agreed to delete them, but the consensus was made to disable them for a time. The team of moderators here do an outstanding job of "policing" this forum considering the huge worldwide membership and I am certain more goes on behind the curtain than we will ever know.

If it were arbitrary and imposed on the membership without warning and without consent then I would see it as censorship. However what the Mods are doing is enforcing a set of clearly posted rules and guidelines to which we all agreed when we joined. With respect, I don't see how that can be considered censorship.

The questions still begs: Where are the standards coming from? What I find objectionable you may not. What is unlawful in the US may not be in Belgium, etc...

True - but I think this is where ReardenSteel's point about multiple mods from around the world comes into play. Also, if the language chosen was explicit and specifically outlawed certain words/phrases/whatever that would be highly ineffective as it would imply that anything not specifically banned was OK. There has to be scope for judgement in any code of conduct, and the inclusion of the specific language you have indicated allows for that scope.

Every community (whether online or in the real world) has somehow to establish its own code of conduct and determine what is and is not acceptable. Personally I think the SPR Mods have collectively done a bang-up job on that front.

Another great thing about this place is that we can disagree on a great many things while still maintaining respect for each other and each others' views. :)

While I never use it on other forums, does this forum have an ignore feature?

If so simply let it be known when you find someone offensive that your ignore list is about to grow. Once enough people start ignoring a behavior...it self regulates.

Personally I find unwritten rules work the best. A gentleman knows these rules and how to steer some of us lessers in the right direction.

If someone threatened to ignore me, I would take heed, for if that person is regularly sharing good stuff, I want to be able to engage him/her.

Those that do not care about this sort of thing will sort out in the wash soon enough;)

I don't buy into that notion! I really don't. I have taken social anthropology classes, lived in a few places, and ultimately have come to the conclusion that being a man in a gentlemanly manor is pretty much a universal condition. Morals aside, and how people communicate face to face may be different - but no so much when it comes to typing...

Though I have to admit some cultures are more direct than others - it doesn't mean they are necessarily more Juvenal or prone to being aggressive or "potty mouthed" lol :).

I agree. But some cultures are SO direct that it sparks anger or rage in others. I could tell stories.

Tone, as we know is an art, at best, in the typed word. This seems to create the most problems on the forums I frequent.

Potty mouth trash talk....that is another thing. My name has drawn some in the past...and I typically roll with it because I'm tough like that. In the end we all need to decide how thick our skin is and act accordingly. Personally, can appreciate both sides of the table, but I'm a guest here (a new one, at that) so I hope to show some respect;)

For what it is worth I selected the name 'unit' about 12 years ago as a mathematical homage to the smallest component that bears the attributes of what it represents.

That is how I see it...we are all components of a discussion and when someone fails to respect EVERYONE equally (or when one starts to believe they are more than someone else)...that is usually when problems arise.

Tone is a hard one... but I'll say this. I have gotten into some very heated battles here on SRP. Especially when it comes to Econ - I get excitable. In the end - knowing that people are engaged is all that really matters, and after a few posts bantering - most of those I have bantered with have agreed to disagree. No hard feelings. That is being a gentleman I think. I still respect the person(s) though I might not see eye-to-eye.

But as a great example as to what it is to not be a gentleman - I was responding to a mans post - I even hit "reply with quote." After that man saw my post - rather than argue the point, or concede that he lost - he edited his post making it look like I took a little part of his post rather than the whole, and went to town on him... His little edit changed the entire tone of his post after the fact. (cute trick)

Then he had the audacity quote me - and tell me to relax LOL!

That - is no gentleman! Matter a fact - his changing tone after the fact made me lose all respect for him :)!

Jumping into this kinda late, but I think this is a great topic.

Personally, I don't like censorship. I don't like it when people type that $&"&%#%! garabage (lest it is in comical gest). I don't like it when people refrain from something because they don't want to "ruin" an impression with someone. With all that standing, I completely accept a system of rules and regulations when visiting an area.

Just like Unit said, I too have tough skin. Which means there is probably a few people out there who don't. I feel like those rules are there for those who don't and to keep us numb ones in check. Nothing wrong with a little regulation, and like many have said before in this thread; if that is the itch you need scratched,you can find it elsewhere.

In my 64 years on this planet there has been a definite coarsening of the culture. In the late '50s and early '60s comedian Lenny Bruce went to jail for using obscenity in his stage act. Twenty years later people were listening to Richard Pryor and Eddie Murphy using the same language, or worse, and they were 'stars.'

I think it must depend on age, background ..... I was a street kid and used foul language from my early teens. OTOH, even in my young manhood, doing ironwork in an all male world, I did not use that language in front of children at all, or women who I was not intimate with. Certainly not in front of my mother or sister.

When I began going to AA meetings in the 1980s I was surprised, and offended, at the foul language routinely used in meetings in front of ladies. I couldn't be too offended though because it soon became apparent that the fairer sex used the same language in many cases.

Now I find myself working with three different men who are all 30 years old. So they grew up in the years when film and what have you loosed realism on society and they do not find it incongruous to use the 'F' word in front of men women, children. It is almost used by them as punctuation. Every other word. I don't think they could speak without it.

I find it sad that this is what the world has come to ...... at least the world I live in. I remember reading somewhere, many years ago, that obscenity and profanity ..... there is a difference ..... were used by people who lacked a vocabulary sufficient to express themselves. Anyway ..... the policy at SRP is to keep it clean. A little oasis in a polluted culture isn't a bad thing.

The standards come from a group of mods trying their very best at applying the rules on this site.
We are a diverse group, and some of our discussions on certain topics can get lenghty:)

Sensorship is indeed a slippery slope, but I have a hard time seeing that what we are discussing falls under that term.
A set of rules on a privately owned net-forum is not sencorship.
I would call that responsible ownership more than anything.
Rules surround us in all parts of our life.
Wether implied or expressed.

I am not sure what you mean here. There have certainly been some that have questioned my screen name, but it has never been lodged as objectionable. Regardless, if I attended a site that found it to be so, I would leave quietly....for anyone unwilling to listen to my explanation, or unable to decipher my intentions, is no one I want to consort with.

So to answer your question, "what then?"...well, I just did. I think we agree that censorship is not good....however, I am not one to stand by and watch someone hide behind this concept as a way to protect their counter culture ways.

And, No, I do not want or expect a bunch of like minded yes men/woemen to take over this side and have a back patting contest where everyone falls all over each other trying to be the first to agree with everyone else, but I sure would not want to tolerate some of the trolling nonsense I have seen on some other forums (I will spare us all the examples).

I am happy to say in my short tenure here, I have experienced only "professional" and "gentlemanly" disagreements. Agreeing to disagree, or opening one's mind to deeper consideration and discovery of different views (and possible admission of erroneous thinking) are what I have seen.

I guess I have missed out on some of the trash behavior...but we should all be proud that there seems to be quite little of it blowing around this site;)

I'm reasonably sure that the member was not objecting personally to your screen name, just pointing out that fact that what you might consider unobjectionable might be considered objectionable to others. Who is to decide? The answer is, ultimately, the mods and administrators of SRP.

If a mod or member finds something that could be considered inappropriate we will discuss it as a commitee and we will be the ones to determine the appropriate response. But we also rely on the general membership to report abuses as well, since we can't be everywhere at the same time :).

I am reasonably certain also. I just did not understand which side of the fence he was coming from.

FWIW, I think the system here works....I guess that is what I should have said from the start (there is a lot more brevity there;))

Here is the most slippery slope:"A set of rules on a privately owned net-forum is not Censorship" If this is true, then you cannot use the "Publisher's rule" to insulate you from law suits for stuff posted on your website. Once you become the censor, you are no longer publishing which creates larger legal problems. You cannot have it both ways.

Exactly....thank you!! Another point is that if the Mods have to discuss it, how bad can it actually be? And just so you know, I was a Mod on a very large website for many years. I fully understand how difficult it is to manage an international website.

I appreciate the great job the Mods on this site are doing.

Thanks for the kind words. TBH we have a good group of guys (and ladies) here, so in reality it's not like we are constantly fighting off posts with horrible manners, but sometimes it happens. If it's something borderline it goes to the mod forum and the decision is based on majority opinion. However, if a post is clearly pushing the limits of site decorum, or outright crossing the line of decency, a mod will act unilaterally and deal with it as need be. To be fair, that doesn't happen very often (the majority of cases being spammers), but sometimes a situation calls for it.

I can appreciate that...and it is one (of many) reason that I do not have my hand raised to be a moderator (I do not want to make the rules...or the calls regarding when/how to enforce them). I moderated a small blog site a few years back...it was small so it was not too bad, but it gave me a HUGE respect for people that moderate places like this.

There is very little black and white. Rules and laws are digital (i.e. 1 or 0, "on" or "off"), but people are analog (i.e. the spectrum of grays between black and white)...in this regard, laws will always require interpretation to apply them as intended, and laws will need to be left vague enough to allow for interpretation to be effective over time. If you think about that...it is pretty scary, but relying on everyone to use taste, and decency is folly.

The rules on this site, to me, is pretty clear to be honest.
Spelling it out even more would make for very boring reading, and it would be quite hard to cover all bases.

I think you are arguing anarchy here, and I feel pretty sure this site wouldn't be the better for it.
Having a set of rules, and a team that works to uphold them is far from censorship.
A mod on this site is a parttaker of the debates and discussions.
That gives us the opportunity to actually steer discussions away from going south in a hurry, and also be there to guide our users as to our praticing of the set rules.
This, imho, is what gives us all the opportunity to share this hobby, and discuss all other things, on this great site.
It is also what differentiates mods from censors.

In short; if I for a second felt my role here was that of a censor, and not a mod, then I would leave this place in a hurry.
The only way for me to leave even faster, would be if it turned in to your average hate/flame/circular argument site that the net is drowning in.

I think people can take quite a bit;)
But you argued that one should read only what one wants.
This is one of the areas where the differences in culture shows the most on an international forum such as this.
And as such, can be quite hard to moderate.

As you know, I'm from a different culture than the majority on here, and I often find myself wondering about the sensitivity of some posts we do get reported to the mods.
It is not hard to adapt to what the Admins and owners of this site wants though.

We discuss the borderline cases because we are not censors, we are members here, and we do make mistakes.
To ensure that not someone with a bad day makes bad calls, a consencus between the mods at hand adds to ensure that our decisions are in fact somewhat sane:)

Actually, to be serious, I think society in general is getting a bit precious about some things. I heard a conversation on the radio the other day about all this and one guest was saying that it's perfectly OK to upset people; and I agree. I don't think we should all burst in to tears just because we had our tiny little feelings hurt. Some people need to harden the f up.

Having said that, I also think it's quite OK to say "Excuse me, but I take offence to that [word, statement, etc]" and have the other person respect that. It's quite simple. I'd be perfectly OK with some one posting a "Carl, I think you crossed the line there, can you delete that please?"

It actually only took me a week or so when I joined to be 'told off'. I had likened my old boar brush to a 'lady of the night' in the rain; with bedraggled hair. I didn't use the term 'lady of the night' but another word; quite an acceptable word, not a swear word at all. I felt that was a bit precious at the time and still do, but I accept the moderators decision.

It's interesting this thread is getting so many posts. I'm going to keep watching it, as I can't WAIT until it gets closed when someone makes an inappropriate comment :p

That reminds me of the one time I was edited (that I know of). I posted a thread insinuating (or jokingly accusing) that someone from this forum was acting silly in the photo I found posted on the web (someone shaving on a flume ride). A full month after I posted it, the wording was edited because it was possible that someone could have taken offense to it. It did not bother me one bit....mainly because the person who edited it, PMed me notifying me that it was done and why.

This experience reinforced what I thought was true of this site. If and when I step over a line, someone will give me a nudge in the right direction. Seems reasonable to me! It will perhaps happen again...hopefully everyone will remain tolerant of my sense of humor.

I think you are arguing anarchy here, and I feel pretty sure this site wouldn't be the better for it.
Having a set of rules, and a team that works to uphold them is far from censorship.
A mod on this site is a parttaker of the debates and discussions.
That gives us the opportunity to actually steer discussions away from going south in a hurry, and also be there to guide our users as to our praticing of the set rules.
This, imho, is what gives us all the opportunity to share this hobby, and discuss all other things, on this great site.
It is also what differentiates mods from censors.

In short; if I for a second felt my role here was that of a censor, and not a mod, then I would leave this place in a hurry.
The only way for me to leave even faster, would be if it turned in to your average hate/flame/circular argument site that the net is drowning in.



I think people can take quite a bit;)
But you argued that one should read only what one wants.
This is one of the areas where the differences in culture shows the most on an international forum such as this.
And as such, can be quite hard to moderate.

As you know, I'm from a different culture than the majority on here, and I often find myself wondering about the sensitivity of some posts we do get reported to the mods.
It is not hard to adapt to what the Admins and owners of this site wants though.



We discuss the borderline cases because we are not censors, we are members here, and we do make mistakes.
To ensure that not someone with a bad day makes bad calls, a consencus between the mods at hand adds to ensure that our decisions are in fact somewhat sane:)

I agree with all you've said and don't find the moderation on SRP to be an issue. I've never had anything I've written corrected (to my knowledge anyway) and don't plan to start. There certainly are times when a gentle "nudge" will be all that is required and there are times when a heavier hand will be required. I understand the difficulties in moderating a website.
I always take the position that censorship is bad. Any kind at all. I do this realizing that is most likely a necessity. I figure I balance those that I would call "book burners."
My entire philosophy in life is "reasonable." I always try to be reasonable and things seem to work well that way.

Besides, I like to hear the position of other folks from other cultures on certain things: Censorship and privacy rights being two.

A gentleman always thinks carefully before hitting the Submit button. A good rule of thumb regarding your posts is whether or not the subject is something you'd be happy to discuss openly with your Grandmother.

My grandmother was a lot like your grandmother, I think. She was tough as nails and said EXACTLY what she thought. There was absolutely zero filtration between her mind an the tip of her tongue.

This is an interesting thread. I have been following it from the start and to be honest I feel it got a little away from the original idea of the post but still a very helpful post for those new to the site that wish to read it.

I really think a lot of what we are seeing is just do to a large increase of new and younger members. With a mix of tongue and check humor / inside jokes from older members.

With the younger members it is really rare for someone to actually teach them how to be a gentlemen so they are learning it on there own so there will be mistakes along the way.

With the older members as with any group inside jokes and a level of familiarity develop that leads to jokes the are a bit more risqué when looked at by an outsider. As a new member they don't know that these older members have known each other for many years now and think these jokes common place and feel that is where the level is.

None of this is fixable. I find how the mods act both in the public forum and behind the scene sets a good example and is where the majority of the members set their behavior. Those that don't soon find that this is not the place for them and find there own place to go.
