Thanked: 2It's the porcelain one, with the chamber and dish on top with holes in the bottom. Cost about 80 bucks.

That's the one I thought. I have one like it that was made in England.
A small puck of soap goes in the dish part and you fill the bottom with hot water, that keeps the soap warm. The part I'm not 100% sure about is if you're supposed to put a brush in the spout since the opening is so small.
I've done this but it's a bit tricky if you use a larger brush. If you use a smaller brush it has the tendency to want to slide in making it difficult to retrieve.
Maybe someone else has more info.

Thanked: 2That's pretty much what I had thought. Can anyone confirm? I'm curious about the brush too.

Thanked: 3225You will probably find a boar brush works better as they are usually not as bushy as a badger for fitting the hole. Just dip your brush in the water and start to load the brush and face lather. Lay the brush across the puck when shaving. These set ups were not intended for bowl lathering I believe.

Thanked: 485Do you mean one of these?
If so, you fill it with hot water as mentioned, but I think really the purpose of the water is less about keeping the puck of soap in the top warm and more about soaking the brush, which you put in the spout. Scuttles like these were used I think when carting a whole basin of water up from the kitchen to one's room was a hassle. I never use my scuttle, I always use a small bowl sitting in the sink (the bowl is filled with hot water with the brush in it and the sink is also filled with water). This soaks the brush nicely. If I'm using soap, I put some hot water on top of the soap. After my shower, I empty the sink and bowl, refill the sink, and load my brush from the soap container. I then either face lather or make the lather in the nicely warmed bowl. Normally I face lather a soap and make the lather in a bowl if using a cream.
While I strop and shave, the brush sits in the bowl which is sitting in the hot water in the sink, which keeps it nicely warm.
I can go in to more detail (believe me, it's very detailed) or even post a video.

Stranger, if you passing meet me and desire to speak to me, why should you not speak to me? And why should I not speak to you?
