Shaving cream Death Match 3000
Because of my experimenting with Headslick cream last week,(there's a thread about it somewhere in here) I decided to do a side by side comparison with the monolith of mentholated goodness we all know better as Proraso.
The test is simple: Using identical meathods, I lathered up half of my face with Proraso, half with Headslick, and shaved away. I used two cereal bowls and a pair of burma shave brushes hastily bought at Wally World as the lathering equipment.
So here is the breakdown:
Availability... Headslick wins hands down. Even though Proraso can be had at Target stores, they hide the stuff in the spa section and even then I've only seen two or three tubes of the stuff at any given time. Headslick can be found almost everywhere. You can't turn around without spotting the bright yellow bottle it seems.
Appearance... Dead heat. They are both white in color.
Fragrance.... Again, a dead heat. They both smell about the same to me.
Lathering Both lather up very well but Proraso takes less time and effort so it wins this part easily.
Face feel....Side by side comparison can be a surprising beastie and this is no exception. Headslick really lets you know it's there. Very cooling and a bit tingly. By comparison, the Proraso just seemed to sit there.
The Shave... To keep things simple, I just did a single, with the grain pass with my razor. Both sides worked equally well. The blade slid through both lathers with no trouble and neither had a clear advantage over the other. Dead heat again.
Post shave...While they both rinsed off equally well, Proraso left my face feeling softer than Headslick. Also, that cooling and tingly feeling that I enjoyed from the headslick at the beginning of the shave now worked against it. My Headslick side was still in the grip of menthol madness and I found it to be a distraction when putting aftershave on. Proraso wins this segment far and away.
The Winner...... The ease of lathering and post shave performance of Proraso gives the Italian cream the win. But not by much. The folks at Headblade don't know the potential world-beater they have with just a few tweaks with Headslick. It will be interesting to see if they catch on.
Now if my sandalwood creams would just arrive I could commence with the next Death Match.

Great post Ape! Looking forward to the next installment. You know, they say styles make the match. How about a soap vs. cream?
