    Default Breaking in a Soap

    This may be my imagination but it seems that I don't get a good lather from a new puck of soap. It seems to take 2 or 3 shaves for the puck to "give it up" properly. Comments?

    The only time I had that problem was with some soap I bought years ago and when it wouldn't lather worth a darn I looked closely and realized there was a clear plastic film over the soap I hadn't removed.

    What I do with a new soap, especially one I haven't tried before, is to use it for a week straight. This serves two purposes: it allows me to "get to know" the soap (learn it's characteristics, water-to-soap ratio etc) and allows the soap to break in for future use. Yes, a soap does need to be broken in, which is basically removing the tough surface layer just like regular bar soap.

    My "ex-wife" cooked a ham with the paper wrapper on (for my mom & dad)...same concept!
