Thread: Williams Soap?

I've been de shaving for a few years and straight shaving a little less. I've never had the rite of passage of trying Williams. I'm a MWF devotee and a fan of Tabac and SRD. How would Williams compare to those soaps?

I would say for the cost of the Williams puck you should just go ahead and try it. I would also say that compared to what you are now using stand by for a disappointment. If it does not work out you can always use it in the shower.

I'm with BobH, give it a try! Me thinks you'll like it. Heck, it's been around as long as it has been for some reason. I remember seeing a thread with suggestions as to get it to later up, water, it loves water. If you think you're using too much water, you're probably not. I've ubered it up with Tabac with great results.

From the penthouse to the outhouse. Williams is a polarizing subject because some people like it and like the idea of using a traditional American product, but just about everyone who has been able to try the Williams pre-Combe ownership agrees it ain't what it used to be.

Old thread but I have to say that I bought another Williams puck today and that is after throwing 2 previous pucks of Williams in the trash over the last couple of years. Surprise, surprise I finally got the damn thing to lather well. On a roll decided to do a 3 pass shave with my Muhle R41 to see if the lather was as good as I thought it was. Sure enough it was up to the job for a BBS shave. Seems I was not previously up to the job of lathering it. Definitely a usable soap but still at the bottom of the heap. I would not suggest it for a newbie to learn to lather on as it would be likely to aggravating and there is more than enough to aggravate you when starting out. OTH when you can lather the easier soaps well there is no reason not to try Williams. I am going to take back "most" of the unkind words I have said about Williams puck shave soap. I was sure wrong about that puppy.

I keep a few pucks around, I do like the fresh clean smell of it.
On the other hand I started with VDH and Williams mug soap and stuck with Williams until I could lather it and well I still have not found a soap I cannot lather in a try or two.
And I think your absolutely right BobH it can be a nice ingredient in an Über Lather.

I'll uber you on the Williams and add a drop or two of glycerin, some Maca Root and a little something of whatever strikes your fancy and drown happily in the resulting suds.

Old Thread? There are many others even older about Williams Shaving Soap including my own when I simply posted how I'd found a way to purchase the shaving soap that I'd been using for about 30 years and boy did that stir up a Hornet Nest! Every time I post I expect to get 'Beat Up' but at that time I had no idea that the Williams soap was such a Love/Hate thing!

Oh: Yes I still use it daily. $0.75 per puck + Tax and I get nice shaves. I've tried others including one that a good friend sent me that cost $10 for a 'Single Puck' and for the life of me I can't tell any difference with how my shave goes! The fancy puck didn't change that on occasion I get 'weepers'/'abrasions'

I don't really uber lather any soaps basically feeling that if they can't stand on their own then they ain't much good. There are still soaps I like much better than Williams and will pay the extra for still. I'm just not going to outright condemn Williams as before. I mean really when a $1 puck of soap and a $6 brush can get it done what can you say.
