    Cool Van Der Hagen kit?

    Hello all,

Has anyone out there tried the Van Der Hagen shave kit. I am a newbie and am looking for a good soap an brush to start with. The kit is sold on amazon and comes with a badger hair brush, mug and soap for about $30. Any suggestions? Also I do not yet own a proper SR. I am thinking of getting a Dovo Shavette to start. It is a less costly investment and if I decide to go proper I will have the shavette for when I need to hone the SR. Thanks for the help!

The VDH set is quite serviceable and of fair quality. It is what I and many others stated with.
Pending your location it may also be available local as well.
The soap performs as well as is needed and stays in my collection.
I also started with a shavette and it is one of many good ways to get started on your journey.

That is what I got when I got back into straights. I still use the glysorin soap. It is OK for a starter. I paid much less in CVS pharmacy.

I got the luxury kit when I first started wet shaving. The luxury kit is completely different from the deluxe. The luxury soap is a lot better than the deluxe IMHO. In fact it is one of the soaps that I will not hesitate to get again. The brush isn't bad, but mine shed quite a bit in the beginning. The mug was nice, but unfortunately I dropped it in the sink and it cracked and chipped. I think the luxury is a good kit cause the mug and the soap are really nice and the brush isn't bad. You can always upgrade the brush later if you want, but the rest will work for a long time.

I have used the VDH kit I found at Walmart 2 years ago. It was the one in the green/black box with a boar hair brush. (The orange box kit was around $20.) It worked great for $9.98. As a matter of fact I still have the brush. It did shed about 20 hairs at first when I washed it a couple times and still sheds a hair every so often. But after 2 years the brush still looks new. (and believe me this brush isn't babied!) I think the Orange box set has a badger in it and a mug with a handle, correct? Get the handled mug If you can as other can slip(small green bowl I had). As for soap Im not sure. I can use just about anything except the canned whipped stuff. Good luck and welcome!

I currently use the VDH kit. I love it. It is the green set. Other than my travel brush i currently have no other ones to put it up against. But it definitely gets the job done. I use many other soaps, but still use the vdh about twice a week. I too started with a shavette with long personna blades. I now use traditional straights and I'm never going back. 4 months in now. Use this forum and the members. Anyone will be glad t help you in anyway. Use the wiki (library) read all about straights . Understanding the tool itself helped me best.

    Happy shaving!

This is the kit I started with. I upgraded from it eventually but it's a good way to learn the ropes.

I ust recently bought this kit. If you have a Target store near you, check that out as I got mine for $19.99. I like it a lot. The soap is nice.

the luxury kit comes in a brown and black box. It comes with a ceramic black mug instead of a green and blue bowl. The brush is eh, but it will get you started. The luxury soap is actually not bad; I put a bit of proraso on top with mine, oh and it comes with an acrylic brush and razor stand as well; so plus in my book. I picked it up for $24.99 at walmart. I bought the other kit about six months ago for a spare bowl and brush; but the brush just fell apart The brush in the luxury kit is better, but still not all that great; I picked up the luxury kit to keep at my girlfriend's with my merkur DE.

This is the one you're looking for...sorry it's in stores only though.
Mastering implies there is nothing more for you to learn of something... I prefer proficient enough to not totally screw it up.
