Using bath/hand soaps has been mentioned on here but this is the first video I have seen on it. Dove seems to perform similarly to Ivory soap as a substitute for a dedicated shave soap from what I have seen on your video. I have tried Ivory soap in the past just to see what it would do. It is a nice trick to have up your sleeve for the times you don't have a shave soap on hand. That is a good looking scuttle and a very generous offer too.

Perhaps I'm not using the scuttle correctly but I am following the method of the video posted on YouTube. A guy was explaining how to use old scuttles. I just find the bowl works much better.

The old style scuttle works well if you face lather which I do. That is you only load the brush from the soap puck on the top of the scuttle and build the lather on your face. I have not seen the video you refer to. Would you have a link to that one?

Back in the '70s I bought a badger brush from Hoffritz For Cutlery and used it for 35 years or so. Until I came to the shaving forums and bought a bunch more I didn't need. So when I first bought the brush I also picked up a puck of soap or two. When I ran out I grabbed up the bar or Ivory or Dove. They were my default washing soap then, and Dove still is. I never bought another puck of soap until I came to the forums in 2006. After being introduced to the good soaps/creams I stuck with them. One day, just for old times sake, I grabbed up my puck of Dove and my old Hoffritz brush and lathered up. I didn't use a bowl for the bar soap whenever I lathered with it, so my lather was never as well developed as yours is in the video, still and all I think I'll stick with the MWF.

I have had those type of scuttles and used to put the puck over the drain holes thinking I was using the thing as designed. Somewhere down the road I read a post on one of the forums that detailed the way it is supposed to be used. The reservoir is filled with hot water and the bristles stuck in there to soak the brush a bit. Lather in a separate bowl and when you've lathered your face, place the brush on the scuttle with the bristles over the drain holes. The puck doesn't go on the scuttle at all. Once I tried that method it made sense, as if you place the puck on the drain holes, it clogs them up pretty quickly. So I'm not sure that is the way it is supposed to go but it sounds right to me.

Hate to disagree with you a bit Jimmy but I believe the vintage/antique type scuttles were meant to hold the soap pucks on top. There are/were pucks made to fit those top bowls with a cupped bottom. What appears to be drain holes might have served to anchor the puck to the bowl. Just a guess as I am not really old enough to have been around back then.
