Default First tries with Mitchell's Wool Fat

Even though I had sworn no more soaps or creams until I had used up some of my lifetime supply, I read enough about MWF that I had to go for it.

With my first puck in hand from SRD, I loaded up the brush I recently got from Pixelfixed and went to face lathering with cold water on an already wet face. I was somewhat nervous because I had read so much about how MWF was water sensitive, could dry out, etc, etc, but I was very pleasantly surprised to find it lathered well and easily on my face with my supposedly hard tap water. It didn't take as long as some others to whip up, nor did I have any drying problems. In fact, I found that it lasted quite well, stayed quite slick and with a minor re-loading of the brush, it was plenty for my usual 2 1/2 passes, and in fact, I could have lathered again for another pass if I had need to.

All in all it was one of the best soap experiences I've had...or maybe it was the magic brush . Anyway, since then, I've used it twice more with the same results.

If you haven't tried it, I recommend it. If you're one of the folks that's been raving about it...you were right. Thanks!

MWF is kind of in a class by itself. It doesn't have a "high end" scent yet in the performance Dept. it's right up there.

Thanks for your observations, gents! How much scent does MWF have? I'm interested in trying it too, but prefer unscented soaps because of potential irritation from the fragrances. I use the unscented AoS almost exclusively, but it would be nice to find another unscented/mildly scented quality soap.

I would say that MWF has a low level mid soap scent. That is kind of old fashioned. It also contains lanolin which irritates some peoples skin.

I'd say it just smells like soap....Ivory or something unscented. The lanolin is supposed to be a calming and hydrating ingredient, although I imagine any ingredient could irritate someone. I'd give it a try if I were sensitive.

You can get a sample of MWF from Whipped Dog. It's a great way to try it. I did and found it to be very good and the scent is nice.

A year and a couple of months ago I started shaving with a straight razor. A very generous guy sent me a box with 5 different soaps in it. MWF was one of them. I think I tried them all withing the next couple of weeks and MWF was my favorite. Keep in mind I was just starting and my shaving technique was lacking. So I could have taken a good soap and gotten razor burn at no fault of the soap. Anyway, I've tried a few others over the past year and MWF is the one I still prefer. Right now I'm also using Proraso menthol cream and SRD lime. Only used the lime two or three times and haven't gotten a decent lather yet. It's because I haven't gotten the water/soap ratio right I don't think. It's always too watery. I do like the lime fragrance though. I'll get the lather right in the next few days I'm sure. And maybe MWF is still my favorite because I've gotten the water/soap ratio down pat. I get a great lather using it with warm water and cold water both. So far I prefer my scuttle to face lathering. And the shave is always pleasant and smooth. I've used it with and without pre-shaves. So as a one-year newbie MWF is my favorite so far and I think it's worth a try for anyone.
