    Default Tabac Smell

I acquired a Tabac stick of deodorant and some after shave lotion. Well SWMBO took an absolute dislike to the smell in no uncertain terms.

Well I have also been trying to get some Tabac shave cream and have heard how fantastic this stuff is, but am wondering how long the smell will linger if I only use the shave cream without the other stuff used as well. I figure it's easier going with the flow rather than trying to rock the boat. She has never objected to me using any shave product before this.

Geez she reckoned I smelt like a dirty old man, a couple of things immediately popped to mind. How does she know what a dirty old man smells like, and what does she mean by the term dirty?

    Cheers

Maybe it was too strong? Whenever I shave with it, the scent lingers a little bit, but it's not really noticeable except to my girlfriend when she kisses me. It could be because I rinse my face pretty well after I shave. To me, it smells flowery and has a little bit of a talc scent to it. It doesn't strike me as being tobacco-ish. I could suggest getting some Grandpa's Pine Tar soap and shaving with that, wait for her reaction, and then switch back to the Tabac. Her opinion of Tabac after that soap is sure to rise!

I don't like the scent either. Just like I don't enjoy the EDT or the Colognefrom Tabac. It's just a matter of taste and a little like Marmite....you Hate it or you Love it.

It's the Tabac soap, not the cream that is so great (performance-wise, and yes - I love the scent too - great old-school touch)

Not that it matters for you - as I assume you want to keep your wife happy. Too bad she didn't like it. Your questions might hit closer than you think.

I can't tell you what to do, but I'd just talk to her. And I would find another soap / cream

    Cheers

    Hi Ivo,

Believe it or not my wife is still banging on about it, and how it's such a disgusting smell. I have never seen her react to anything quite like this before, which I suppose I should be grateful for.

Are you saying it's the soap which is the fantastic shaver, as opposed to the cream in the tube? What smell is Tabac reminiscent of, is it old spice or something?

    Cheers

    Hi John,

yes, I think the soap is better. And this seems confirmed by reviews I have seen somewhere.

Scent - this is very individual, but to me it does differ significantly from Old Spice - despite the fact that both are unquestionably old time, old school style. OS is too sweet for me, and Tabac is a leathery type scent. In fact, I used to follow it up with Spanish Leather from GF Trumper and my wife liked it. If I have to compare the two, Tabac is more manly imo. (No offense meant to OS lovers whatsoever)

    Cheers

    Ivo,

It appears I will have to try a bit harder to track this soap down, despite what howls I may have to endure. Hopefully the scent will not be as enduring or overwhelming like the A/S lotion and the DO stick which I think were the main offenders.

    Cheers

Tabac was a fashionable scent in the 70s, along with Brut, replacing Old Spice.

Aromas have an amazingly link to memories for all of us, and some associations can be strong. Guerlain's Mitsouko has always reminded me of my grandmother, who died when I was about 4. If your wife has a strong association with Tabac, you'd be well advised to find a different soap.

    Paul,

She seems to have this association with dirty old men and Tabac together(perhaps that's where I fit into the picture ). I don't really know why because she was only a young child in the seventies when it was popular, I really don't know why she is so offended by it?

    Cheers
    John
