Default Musgo Real Classic Scent shave soap puck

    Got this in today.

I had read some pretty horrible reviews of this soap on other forums but decided to see for my self. Lathered up and did a 2 pass shave with a Muhle R41 2013 version and a Feather blade. Can't see what all the fuss was about. I loaded it a little longer than normal because of the bad press with a Simpsons Chubby 2 synthetic and face lathered. It produced an entirely serviceable lather. If it continues to perform like this first impression shave I will be happy with it. It does have a nice scent too. I am really scratching my head about this one.

I have used this puck soap a few times now and am still puzzled that it has had bad reviews. Has anyone else recently tried this soap? Wondering if they changed the formula since it's recent introduction?

Negative reviews were the norm for Musgo Real soap, but maybe Musgo Real finally listened to complaints and improved their shaving soap, similarly to what L'Occitane did with their shaving creams.

The word does not seem to have spread however, as few of the usual sources list the product.

I dunno, just used cold water and face lathered with a few different brushes. Ah well, if you get a bad rep at the start it will kill you everytime with a product.

AFAIK, the formulation hasn't changed. For a bowl latherer like me, it was an absolutely horrible soap, only good as a bath soap.

Interesting, I'll have to try bowl lathering it and see if it makes a difference.

I personally enjoy the musgo real line of preshave soaps very much. They clean and prep the face prior to lather and are glycerin based, smell great and last a long time. The shaving soap that you purchased, I like as well. It's not my go to, as I prefer the cream based lathers apparently, but find it does lather, smell and lubricate well. Be it synthetic, badger, or horsehair brush I use.
    YMMV.
    Cheers.

On some soaps it makes a huge difference, at least for me. The same happens with MWF, the lather I get from it when bowl lathering is quite inferior to the one I get when face lathering. I don't find it to be great either way, but when bowl lathering it's simply unusable.

Ok, I tried bowl lathering this soap. I used an SOC 2 band silver tip badger brush, cold water and an ordinary smooth coffee cup. I have not really bowl lathered in a couple of years so the results may not be as good as someone who bowl lathers on a regular basis.

I found that you really have to load the brush for a long time on the puck, a full minute or more. My ridged scuttle may have worked better at building the lather instead of a smooth coffee cup. Yes, you have to work to make this soap lather. So here are the results.

I did not want to waste the lather so I did a 2 pass, XTG and ATG, shave with a Muhle R41 2013 and Feather blade with a few shaves on it. Nice shave.

I have to agree with MikeB52 that it would not be my go to soap but it is far from being only a bath soap for me. If people find it difficult to lather and by that they mean it makes you work for it I can understand that. That does not mean it will not give an entirely serviceable lather to shave with if I put the effort into making it, at least for.

Now I remember why I don't bowl lather anymore, I have to go wash my coffee cup out before I use it again.

Several uses in on this soap and it has gone up a notch or two in the performance it gives for me. I like it as much as their shave cream which I have and use. Yea, it has been up graded to well passed serviceable to an excellently performing soap for me.
