Thread: A pleasant surprise!

I have been using some good soaps lately and so had all but forgotten an old friend. In a lonely mug nearby was a puck of Van Der Hagen cheapo? soap mixed/melted with about a half teaspoon of glycerin a long time back.

Today it struck my interest and with a loaded brush I whipped up a great fine lather on my face.
It was one of the better shaves I've had in a while. It shall be visited more often in the future!

Other moral: Some of us have way too many soaps!

I am reminded that "price does not always describe shave quality" every time I lather up with Arko or Palmolive shave sticks. There are probably a few other low coast gems out there too. Thanks for the reminder.

I am going with Spendur on this one. I tried VDH but without glycerin. It just did not have the cushion I like.

OTOH, VDH makes a great pre-lather soap. When my "bits and pieces" mug runs dry the VDH is put back in service.

I did the same thing with my Williams and it and awesome performer.

I buy the VDH luxury soap. Now that they sell it near me I make sure to buy it whenever I run out and it finds a constant spot in my rotation. The other VDH soap isn't bad, but I will take the luxury soap over it if I can get it.

High price doesn't necessarily mean a more comfortable shave, but it often is the case. It almost always means a more enjoyable one, though, with the better scents, etc.

Pardon the soap-box, but to me if one adds something like glycerin to a soap, then the credit for being a good soap should go to the glycerin instead of the basic soap it was added to.

That being said, I have had some pretty fine shaves with Williams (which I liked the scent of) and regular Van Der Hagen (which I hated the scent of).

The odd thing about very expensive products is that the buyers rarely say the purchase was not really worth the the extra even if they think it was. That pretty well supports the line "you always get what you pay for".

The VDH luxury is one soap that I have been wanting to try. I think that this might have just convinced me to buy. What's the scent like?
