Too much of a challenge for me I'm afraid.
Bob
I'm satisfied with the soap, and used to use it exclusively long before finding SRP. However, since a puck lasts me about 5 years, there's no way I'm going to ignore all of my other (sorry to say) much better soaps for that long.
I can get a good shave with Williams, it does not carry the cushion in it like it did years back, and does not compete with my Harris soap's nor with my other top tier soaps. I've always been a guy that enjoyed the scent of Williams. it's just a shame they didn't care about making a quality product in the wet shaving market of today. When I use it which is rare anymore, it's just mostly for the memories I have of it from the past, when it was also a much better soap too, and the scent is nostalgic for me. My two cents on it.

I have used it for years when I started using soap instead of shaving cream. I was a DE user then and used it up until I started my addiction and found this site. I now have many of a selection of creams and soaps. I still like Williams shaving soap. A careful shopper could have probably bought me a better soap for 90 cents. which is what I paid for a puck of it the other day.
I'll tell you what...
Just to get back on track with the original intention of this thread, I will relent (a little) and vow to use nothing but Williams for the next two weeks.
I just spent some time this weekend at the Honemeister's house and got to shave with a fantastic soap that I was going to order, and was looking forward to using more, but I will hold off and stick with William's for two weeks.
Till the puck is gone?

I'd rather shave dry, then fighting my way through a shave with a half a** disappearing lather. However it is a challenge soooo.
Challenge accepted.
Great humor guys !.....aww it isn't that bad, I'm still gonna pass on this one, maybe later on though, glad you use and enjoy the Williams Gino.

FYI, Williams is not being discontinued. I read that it was on another site, then read that distribution was going to be limited, then read that discontinuation was being considered, then finally read that it was not being discontinued.
I received this email reply today (10/01/15):

Are you discontinuing Williams Mug Soap?
So just like my attempt to corner the market on "old Coke," apparently my warehouse of Williams ain't gonna pan out either?
Well, I have been shaving with it for the last few days, and I must say that I think it is much easier to make a perfectly good lather with it when I face lather rather than making lather in a bowl. I hardly ever face lather, but it is in fact a bit more satisfying to do so and I think I will do much more of it in the future, even after my two weeks of Williams are up!
Like Utopian probably has, I have shaved with Williams Mug soap exclusively until the puck was gone many times. (If one is sparing with it a puck can last a long time!)
I agree with you, Utopian, face lathering seems to produce better lather than lathering in an eponymous mug. No idea why.
Thanks, CaliforniaCajun - reading that Williams Mug shave soap will still be available, albeit in a limited way made me surprisingly happy.
I have used up 3or 4 pucks since I started shaving. I still have almost 4 pucks but have been using proraso, Arko, and some samples of creams and MWF. I can get a good lather out of williams but it isn't as good a skin conditioner as the other soaps and creams I've been using. Until the last 3 months I only had Williams so I got used to it.
I've been looking for a new job for a year now and have had no success. I started shaving with Williams about a week ago. On Wednesday night I heard about a new job that had not been advertised yet. I interviewed for it on Thursday morning and was offered the job that afternoon. Then on Friday I pitched a meeting for another job and they scrambled to set up a couple of rushed interviews for this Monday.
Was Williams responsible for any of this? Probably not--but now I'm not shaving with anything else for a while!
I'm not sure if I can even find it locally anymore. Lots of places that carried it do not have it anymore.
Lots of places sell it online. Of course shipping may be more than the soap itself.
Yesterday morning I had to prepare for a job pitch meeting. Since I had good luck with Williams earlier and vowed to continue with it for a couple of weeks, I chose to stick with it. Just for fun I honed up a razor I had intended to clean up for the past few years, but decided to just go ahead with it as is. I honed it up on an Ohira Renge Suita followed by a Nakayama Kiita. The razor and hones are in the photo below.
Despite my contention that Williams is not a "high quality" shaving soap, I got a fantastic shave!

The local jail got to be in such disrepair they couldn't use it anymore. So, for the petty offense violators our judge orders them to shave with Williams for 90 days. I understand some would rather be carted off to the county jail and do real time instead.
Cruel and inhumane!
Heres a few seconds in an old spice mug with a 20mm whipped dog synthetic just 30min ago. I think it did alright.

More important question is how did it look and last on your face during the shave?
It lasted as long as I was shaving but it was slightly thinner then most soaps lather. I had a DFS in 2 passes with a Schick type C very little feedback from the clubman so it did a decent job protecting my face. It worked alright but it didn't have that luxury feel of other soaps like MWF or some of the european creams.
So this thread peaked my interest in Williams again. Have bought and thrown out more then one puck do to the fact I just could not get decent lather that would last a shave out of it. But for a little over a buck figured I would give it another shot. So on Friday I picked up a puck popped in an old Yardley wood soap container I have. Soaked my vie long hoarse hair brush and just started loading the brush like a I would any other soap, with brushing just the tips over the soap. Within 30 secs brush looked perfectly loaded so started face lathering. Lathered great and lasted for three passes. Since Friday shaved twice more with similar results.
So with all the problems I have had in the past with this soap I have to ask if any one has heard if they have reformulated this soap again. I know it had been scheduled for discontinuation but is not now. I wonder if they decided to reformulate instead.
It's a interesting question, but as i mention in other threads i only have 1 trouble whit modern Williams since i'm using it. To my opinion it was a bad soap, when i open a new puck i let it soak over night and in the morning when i shave i trow the water out and there's no slimy stuff in the water, but that morning i lost almost 1/2 of the puck whit that slimy stuff. After a great deals of atempts i wasn't able to get any good lather from that puck so i use has as a hand soap. The next puck i used was perfect just like usual. For the question of reformulated well i can really tell cause i never had a chance yet to tried Vintage Williams yet, but if it's true Combe co had the intention to do it i guess to my opinion they would charge more for the soap. By hearing all the good comments about Vintage Williams to my opinion it would a great idea. Gino
I have never used Williams. I do, however, have a puck I found at an antique store. I looked up the UPC code and dated to somewhere in the 1980s. I still haven't decided whether I'll try it out. There's a part of me that thinks it's hilarious that I have a 30 year old puck of soap, so maybe I'll see if my local grocery store has Williams so I can try it out.
Well in response to this thread (and after reading utopians lucky results) I have been using my Williams. I've never had a problem with it. I soak it for 5-10 minutes the first time I use it and then just use it as any other soap. Thick lather in seconds. No fuss. Doesn't smell the prettiest but it smells like a 'mans' soap. Not the best not the worst. For the $ it's pretty damn good IMO. I'll keep using it for a while but I don't think I want to use any soap exclusively until it's gone. Could it be in the skill of the user?
Had a new puck of Williams given to me a while ago. Gave it a go last evening. Didn't have a problem getting it to lather. Kent Infinity synthetic brush. Like the classic smell. Shave was ok. But not much protection. Resulted in some irritation. Also left my face feeling pretty dry. The puck is now on the shower shelf. It will be used on the rest of me instead of my face. Just my .02 cent.
This is part of the reason why my soap pucks last for several years and so many others' last for months, or less.
I would never (ever) soak a puck of soap overnight. I think that there are very few soaps that gain any benefit at all from any form of pre-soaking; and even for them I only put on (at most) a teaspoon of water on the puck before I shower and then when I am ready to use the soap, if there is any water still on the surface of the puck, I dump that water into my lathering bowl.
I will never understand this habit of pouring unused soap, in the form of unused soapy water (aka, white slimy stuff), right down the drain.
Papabear11: I am NOT criticizing you. You can do anything you want with your soap. I simply disagree with your method.
I know they started using the UPC codes in the 1970s, and it's pre-upc that's normally considered the good Williams. However, the box I have still has the price circle in the corner (which disappeared in the 1990s), that dated my Williams somewhere in the 1980s. I realize it's not "vintage" in terms of the best Williams. As I said, I just think it's funny having a 30 year-old puck of soap in my bathroom! :rofl2:
I was at Target today and didn't see any Williams--only Van der Hagen; and even that only came in a kit.
To be honnest Williams(modern) is the only shaving soap that a soak overnight(new puck). For all others soaps(hard puck) i use few tea spoon of water on top of the puck. Even if i do the overnight soaking whit Williams i've got no slimy stuff exept for that day, a puck of Williams last me for about 2 to 3 months if i use it 5 days a week, maybe around 2 1/2 months if i used it 7 days a week. At $1.69 a puck it's a bargain for me knowing that
Williams gave me real good shaves, no harm done i dont take your comment has a critic we all have different ways to work our soaps and to me i have sucsess whit Williams the way i do. It's also good for you that your method works for you. Gino
It may be just me but lots of wet shavers complain about Williams that doesn't gave any or not much protection, well maybe it's just my face like someone say's on you tube i have the skin of a rhino lol, no seriously i have no trouble whit Williams i get great shaves whit it and my facial skin deosn't get red or any irritation. The only thing is after the shave i have to rince whit lots of warm water to take out the soap ressidute, if i dont it will dry my skin more then other soaps. I also found that Aqua velva after shave are the best combination whit that soap, Aqua velva Classic Blue to my opinion is the best bet, even Old Spice classic works pertty good to. Gino
You pretty much know if a lather is going to give much protection at the time you make the lather. Of course lathers vary, but you can get some sense of it while building the lather. I consider Williams to be comparable to Ivory soap. Williams works but it just does nothing in the realm of pleasure. That is, other soaps offer a better experience both in sense of smell (primarily) and consistency of the lather.
I was thinking ivory too. I actually get a great lather from Ivory soap and Williams is right there. Ivory might smell better. Lol. Williams may not be a luxury soap but I've been using it now for a couple weeks exclusively and no problems.
I had a good shave today here's a picAttachment 216162
