Thanked: 1soaps containing clay.. put my mind at ease..
ok, so I 've heard through the grapevine, that soaps containing clay could have a negative effect on the edge of a straight, seeing that it is an abrasive substance.. In the real world, is this really something to be concerned about, or is it so minimal, that it really isn't an issue?

Thanked: 2591Unless the clay particles are harder than the steel in your razor, I do not see any ill effects on the edge.

I've used straights with Mike's soaps on many an occasion and never noticed any adverse effect on the edges. Enjoy Mike's soaps...they're excellent.

Thanked: 10I've used several soaps that have clay in them, and have yet to have any issue with them dulling my straight.

Average clay particle is about 2 micron this is similar to a 12k stone. The particles of clay are suspended in the lather as well as on your face, so the blade may pass over some of the particles but most will be lifted with the lather never endangering the edge. This is my take on the micro view of shaving, so I don't and wouldn't worry about clay. Anecdotally I use soaps with clay everyday with no ill effects.

One of my new favorite soaps from Sudsy Soapery is a clay based soap. I haven't noticed any issues with my straights or safety razors.

So if it equivalent to 12k then it should be touching your edge up each time you shave 😅
