Keeping lather warm?
So I'm wondering what everyone does to get and keep their lather warm from 1st to 2nd and 3rd pass.
I bought a skuttle from SRD and that has helped but am curious if anyone else has any tips.

When I have the time, I fill my scuttle and nuke it in the micro wave it for a minute. Works for me.

I have used a Mr. Coffee electric mug warmer under my lathering bowl in the past.
Would un-plug it after it got warm enough - to prevent it from getting too hot.
Don't bother with it anymore.

A quality scuttle holds enough water to keep things hot the entire shave. You don't want it too hot because many soaps break down the lather with hot water. Some don't even need typical tap hot water to deteriorate. You want a scuttle that holds around 20oz or more.

This is all I use. I keep my Tabac in it... fill it up with hot water five minutes before I shave, put on the lid, soak my brush in hot water for the same, and by the time I finish my shower, I just pour off the water and it keeps the heat in just fine.

I fill my scuttle up with hot water from the tap. my brush is also soaking in the hot water too. I take a shower. After I dry off, I dump the water in my scuttle and add new hot water to it. Lather stays nice and warm.
Is it over there or over yonder?

Thanked: 171As straight shaver and face latherer, I found little benefit in scuttles and no longer use them.
I might experiment with the scuttle again at some time in the future, but all I need to do right now is dip the tip of the shaving brush into the sink filled with warm water.
As straight shaver I feared at first that I might damage the razor in the sink and was reluctant to abandon running water to rinse the blade between passes, but I have been doing it for quite some time now and it works quite well.

Lumberjack,
If you want warm lather, use a scuttle. No, not hot lather; rather, warm lather. Extremely hot water will break your lather. Warm lather is the way to go.
There are generally two types of scuttles: brush or lather. The brush scuttle is designed to keep your brush warm during the shave. I have used a number of them, including Moss, but my preferred brush scuttle is Straight Razor Design's.
In a lather scuttle, you can actually make lather in the scuttle bowl. At the same time, the scuttle will keep your lather warm throughout the shave. I have used a number of these, as well, including Schwarzweisskeramik and Dirty Bird, but I prefer Schwarzweisskeramik, which is a sweet brush scuttle.
There are improvised ways of keeping your lather warm, too, and I do that when traveling. At home, though, I use the SRD scuttle, if I feel like face lathering and want to keep my brush warm, or the Schwarzweisskeramik, if I feel in the mood to bowl lather and keep my lather warm.
Both keep my brush sweet and warm.

Thanked: 72Hot tap water in my Schwarzweisskeramik scuttle keeps my lather warm for up to 45 minutes. Maybe just because of it's large size, but it works great. I use it every day.

I keep meaning to get a scuttle and forgetting... so I soak my ceramic lather bowl and brush in a cappuccino mug filled with hot water while I shower.
Usually keeps the lather warm for about 20 minutes.
The other night I considered filling it with ice water after a day that hovered around 100 degrees. May have to start an ice water shaving thread. Some people never go crazy. What truly horrible lives they must lead - Charles Bukowski
