Thoughts on received samples - Part 1
I thought I would post my thoughts on some samples that I received some time ago. This post only has cologne and shaving cream, future posts will also include face treatments and shaving soap.
I do want to also include the thoughts of six ladies at work who gladly participated in a study I conducted. The ladies were only told to write down the fragrances they would like to smell on a guy. The make up of the ladies was multi-cultural and covered a large age spectrum.
Here are my thoughts and the responses of the ladies:
Shave Cream
Geo. F. Trumper Rose - I did not like this at all. I thought that it was feminine. Only one of the ladies liked it.
Geo. F. Trumper Coconut Oil - I really did not like this. I thought it smelled like suntan lotion. Only one of the ladies liked it.
Geo. F. Trumper Almond - No one liked this one.
Geo. F. Trumper West Indian Extract of Limes - I thought this would work out nice for the Summer and Spring seasons. Five of the ladies liked it.
Geo. F. Trumper GFT - My personal favorite. Five of the ladies liked it also.
Truefitt & Hill 1805 - This was OK. I could see myself using this, but it didn't seem to be in the same league at the GFT and Limes. Four of the ladies liked it. (One lady stated that she associated this fragrance with something a mature gentleman would wear.)
Cologne
Geo. F. Trumper Astor - I did not like this. I thought it was feminine. All six of the ladies liked it. (This suprised me.)
Geo. F. Trumper Sandalwood - I thought this would be OK for Winter, but way too overpowering for Summer. Four of the ladies liked it.
Geo. F. Trumper West Indian Extract of Limes - I was OK with this as a Summer cologne. Only two of the ladies liked it. (Two others liked the same fragrance in the shaving cream, but not the cologne.)
Penhaligon's Douro - I did not like this at all. It seemed to be more for a younger guy, not one in the early graying stages. Only two ladies liked it.
I hope to post my thoughts on the following in the next posting:
Shave Cream
Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort
Cologne
Geo. F. Trumper Spanish Leather
Geo. F. Trumper GFT
Penhaligon's Opus 1870
Penhaligon's English Fern
Penhaligon's Blenheim Bouquet
Skin Treatment
Geo. F. Trumper Extract of Limes Skin Food
Geo. F. Trumper Coral Skin Food
Truefitt & Hill Ultimate Comfort Aftershave Balm
I also just received some samples for The Gentlemen's Quarter. I will post my thoughts on these at a later date.

Great reviews Bob, thanks! Interesting that Astor received consensus amongst the ladies. Might have to try that one out.
I've always liked 1805 but felt it was too subtle and wore off too quickly.
Would be interested to see what you think of Coral Skin Food as it's a somewhat ubiquitous product on this forum, it seems!

Thanks for the reviews. I just bought a tube of the 1805 myself and if that makes me smell older, I guess I can live with that.

Thanked: 9Hi and thank you for the thoughts. It would help us if you posted photos of the ladies and their opinions. Clothing optional
Just kidding, of course.
I feel the need to express my support for Trumper's Rose shave cream and CSF. Both are great products, well liked by THE lady in my life. ( However, we do come from Bulgaria, and it's famous for its roses and rose essence, which is used in Chanel, Creed, etc. Maybe we are more used to the scent than others. It's not feminine on me, just guy-sultry - not sure what's the word for this)
Of the colognes - Spanish Leather is most appealing to me; in fact I just used it for a party the other night (chosen over Creed GIT and Vetiver) and was very well received.
I did get samples of T&H and am very glad that I did - because I can honestly say that I didn't like ANY of the flagship scents. I would have been very disappointed if I had bought any online without sampling.
Moral: always ask for samples. You never know what YOU are going to like or hate
Cheers

Thanked: 346I love Bulgarian Rose (Otto) as well as Violet and Lavender. The wife hates rose scents, she thinks they smell like air freshener. Fortunately she likes Czech & Speake #88 just fine since she mostly picks up on the sandalwood while I bask in the scent of the Rose Otto.

Thanked: 9I didn't know this - never seen it in your SOTD, as far as I remember
To me a good rose is far from air fresheners, too bad that this would not help you with your wife too much. I myself have some scents that I avoid when we go out or have something special - there others we both like.
Cheers
